By the way, I read the sticky thread regarding the uploading of avatars, but it cannot be done. My theory is that I must have a certain number of posts or have some sort of title before I can do so, yes?

I believe so, The more you post the faster you go up in rank, the more privileges you get. Some ranks are earned by how long you have been a member as well as the number of posts. There are a lot of different prepared avatars to choice from until then and you can change those and your signature as often as you want.

I think you need 100 posts to upload your own avatar

You need 100 posts and 30 days then you can have your own avatar.
