The 5 Commandments?
Just about everyone has heard of the 10 Commandments given to Moses as part of the laws but how many actually know the 5 Commandments given to Noah and his sons after the flood?
Anyone?
hint: Genesis 9
Edit: (see below)
1. "Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth."
They were to not only have children but to grow and cover the entire earth.
2."Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things."
The animals are given to man to eat just like the plants are, they are not to eat just just plants (vegetarian).
3. "But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat."
No eating the life/blood of animals (dietary restriction).
4. "And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man. "
We will be held accountable though for all blood spilled by us whether man or beast. Don't abuse or waste what we have been given (be a good steward).
Which leads to the last one:
5. "Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man. "
Or in other words those who murder another are to be executed, period.
So how do these commandments compare with modern social morals and attitudes? Do you agree with them?

Re: The 5 Commandments?
There were actually seven of these commandments. They are as followed...
1 - Do not murder (Shefichat damim).
2 - Do not steal or kidnap (Gezel).
3 - Do not worship false gods (Avodah zarah).
4 - Do not be sexually immoral (engage in incest, sodomy, bestiality, castration and adultery) (Gilui arayot).
5 - Do not utter GOD's name in vain, curse GOD, or pursue the occult (Birkat Hashem).
6 - Set up righteous and honest courts, and apply fair justice in judging offenders, and uphold the principles of the last five (Dinim).
7 - Do not eat the limb of an animal before it is killed (Ever Min HaChai)

Not actually the 5 found in the Bible account. What is the source of your list?

Re: The 5 Commandments?
I remember hearing something about that when I was about twelve or so, during confirmation. We never really went in to detail about it though.
From what I've been seeing on the net, it appears there were seven laws that were handed down to Noah from god. They are:
1. No idols before god.
2. You shall not murder.
3. You shall not steal.
4. No committing of sexual acts such as, adultery, incest, bestiality and homosexual intercourse.
5. You shall not blaspheme god's name.
6. Do not eat flesh taken from an animal while it's still alive.
7. Set up a (just) governing body of law

EDIT: I'm just now seeing someone already posted the laws, LOL. Whoops.

Re: The 5 Commandments?
That's alright since it's not entirely what I am referring to. (Thanks for the link BTW.) The Noahide Laws are supposed to be 6 laws given to Adam and then a 7th added after the flood. After the flood God commanded Noah and all with him (8 people) to do 5 specific things. The 7th Noahide Law (or 6th in your list) was only one of those and can be interpreted in two ways; don't eat the animal while it is still alive (common interpretation) or don't eat the "life"/blood of an animal (as to the dietary restriction in Moses' time).
So what were the other 4?
If anyone can figure them out they could lead to a great discussion.
PS. I left a hint in my first post if you can find it.

Re: The 5 Commandments?
two of them are "to be fruitful and multiply" and "you should eat meat"~
but i'm a loss for the other two, and i don't know if it's cheating to look it up. . .
P.S. why are you guys looking online? wouldn't it be better to look in the Bible itself? it's in Genesis (spelling?) somewhere. . .

Re: The 5 Commandments?
You keep forgetting the "replenish the earth" part after "be fruitful and multiply".
In other words they're not just to have plenty of children but to spread over the entire earth.
The eating meat part is important too. The use of meat as food is equated as being the same as "the herb of the field". So they are supposed to eat both for their own good.
I'll give it till tomorrow before posting the rest. Come on people, Abu Dhabi is right they're in Genesis.

Re: The 5 Commandments?
"Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. "But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man. As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it."
Genesis 9: 1-7
so:
- Be Fruitful; fill the earht
Animals will fear you, but they belong to you
Everything that lives and moves is food
Do not eat anything with life blood
Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed
or at least that's what i gather from it~
