First of all, the label "African American" is the dumbest, most persistently used phrase in our vernacular. Every time you call someone an "African American," you're making at least two assumptions about the person:

1. That the person is an American. For example, if you saw this guy walking along on a street, you would probably think:



...which is fine, except for one small detail: this man is British, which makes you a presumptuous cock.

2. That the person is African (because it's inconceivable that black people could come from Haiti, India, Trinidad, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Australia, or Jamaica). Nevermind that; BLACK PEOPLE ONLY COME FROM AFRICA.


Not to mention that every time you give a black person the distinction of being "African American" out of a mixed group, you're making an assumption about an entire continent; not everyone from Africa is black. I guarantee all you politically correct morons out there have never called a white person an African American. Of course you could avoid all these problems by using the same standards on blacks as you would on whites by simply assuming that all whites are from Africa just as you do for all blacks, but that might be too forward, and in a polite society like ours, people would be all too pleased to point out which of the 192 countries you didn't guess they were actually from.

What an informing rant that was, I'll be sure to ask every black person I see from now one what country they come from instead of assuming that becuase they are black, and in america, they are african american. My apologies for ever assuming a black person was african american.[/sarcasm]

Yeah i never use the term African American, i think thats offensive, because it is. I just say black. My dad is black as night but he isnt from Africa or anything. He is just Mexican. But has really really dark skin! One part contributed by his skin disease that comes and goes. My mother is Sicilian so i am not that dark....actually not dark at all!

Ouuu i can always tell if someone is not of African decent when i meet them! Well i can tell most peoples ethnicity with ease! I dunno how!

This is a good subject to debate on... it's just hard to jump into it... perhaps if people had questions to go by we could expand the discussion.

I.e. Do you use the term 'African American'? Why or Why Not?

What term do you usually use when referring to black people?

What do you call black people from other countries from America?

Or something. I myself don't use 'African American', but I don't get angry when someone does..I mean, although it's not as politically correct as maybe 'Asian American' or 'Hispanic American', it's understood as a politer way of saying simply 'black people (from the US)' - especially by the older crowd. My last year English teacher who was in her 60s, was astounded when she asked the class about this and most people said they use 'black'. She was also amazed that people take offence to 'African American'.

What I don't like is the term "blacks". Like "whites", "asians", "hispanics", etc, it sounds like you're grouping people together like you would books or socks or something.. I dunno ^^;

I agree ^^ I think people use terms like these but in the only mean of being understood, without any undermeanings at all. And other who just jump on conclusion when they hear those...

Still I can't stand either the way people talk about skin colors... and if they want to make such comments everytime they saw black people why don't they do the same with white or every different one's ? Oo
i just thing we talk to big on them, most of the time we don't need to know their color when we speak 'bout them ...
