    Re: Cameras in school

Is this personal use cameras, or security cameras we're talking about here? Because it would be different arguments for both types....

I have no problems with security cameras....they're placed in public areas, so if you're doing something you don't want others to see, don't do it in a public place. That applies even without having security cameras. Either way, someone's gonna see you.

I'm a bit wary of the 'cameras in the bathroom,' as that would easily open up the door to lawsuit city, because that's invading a private area....so I'm not too sure about the correctness of that. Recently in the news there was a teacher who lost his job and went to jail for a bit because he filmed boys in the lockerroom. Having a camera in the bathroom would really be no different, so it would be an easy easy lawsuit. I think I'd need a bit more proof of that one to believe it.

As for personal use video cameras....why even bring them to school? You go there to learn, not to mess around. The only viable time for filming anything would be lunch time...But if you're just filming stuff just because, then there's no point bringing the camera to school. You can film video on the weekend.

If I was still in high school I wouldn't have a problem if they banned personal use video cameras. The schools up here provide cameras for school related projects, which is what I'd be using them for (we just messed around in our tech class, goofing off with filming stuff....but we actually used the film for school credit....not just goofing off for no reason).

    Re: Cameras in school

wow thx for ur opinion, but sometimes video cameras like for security can take away privacy for example we have bathrooms like this

    open door
one room with sinks n paper with a camera
    open nother door
    toilets

    is that going to far?

    Re: Cameras in school

I would say so...I would certainly make a deal out of it if my school did that. Because bathrooms are a private area, where people don't expect they're being watched. What happens (let's say for example), someone has to change their clothes, and they do so in the part with the sinks and paper (I'd assume there would be more room in there than changing in the toilets)??
You now have someone being video-taped, without their knowledge, getting changed.

I would really expect something like that to be covered by privacy laws. It's also setting a standard for who-can-do what, because if you have a school with cameras like that, what would make it illegal for someone to put their own cameras in there? The school could say "oh, well we don't film anyone getting naked, etc, we just film this one area," when some perv can say "well you can't charge me, because I'm not filming anyone getting naked, etc, I'm just filming this one area."

Do they have signs in the bathrooms saying "AREA UNDER SURVEILLANCE," or something? Because unless they do, that is honestly invasion of privacy. I would consider just having a camera anywhere in a bathroom invasion of privacy, and argue with the school about that.

Well yes and no. The abuse of the cameras makes me want to say to ban them. But that would hurt those who use them innocently. It all depends on how bad it is at a school whether they ban it or not. For instance they banned trading cards in my middle school but not my high because it caused problems there but not in the high school. It all depends on the prevelence and the problems its causing. But if thats not bad they shouldn't be banned.

In a single gender school (such as the one I attended), this isn't so much of a problem. People normally just want pictures for high school memories. However, even in a secluded environment, there's always the risk that someone goes too far, and with the advances in Photoshop these days . . . It's not such a problem for me; I fling my hands in front of my face every time a camera is even casually pointed at me! I can understand the rule, but I know it's tough to abide by, especially in your senior year of high school! Talk to the administration about it. My school permitted seniors to carry cameras during the second semester (a small victory, but a victory nonetheless).

You may not think it's a problem, but I'm sure there some pedophile websites that would LOVE to get their hands on some high school locker room photos. And with the competition for money in the online porn industry, you never know if some classmate is making money posting your pictures in some private subscription only section in some website...
