Cameras exposes people's privacy even if it does maintain trouble from happening such as bullying. That is the reason which it causes more harm than good and that should be enough for not allowing cameras at school.
Though camera's are a threat to people's privacy, i don't think it should be banned from schools. Not everyone is misusing it and causing problems. With technology nowadays, even phones have cameras in them. So banning them would be banning the phones along with it.
Usually mobile phones are a privillege and sometimes for safety issues. Having them banned would cause a lot of problems.
I totally disagree with the usage of cameras in the school . It should be banned from using immediately . There is no reason that the schools will have the right to controls all of the students privacy . In fact , the students will be scared of their own safety as some of them may abused it and misused the cameras . Although they might thought that having cameras may help them to identified some of the culprit who breaks the laws , it also have many weakness .
But the cameras are placed in public areas, so it's not invading privacy (except in the case that Raimann mentioned). You are entitled to privacy, which is protected by privacy laws, so the cameras aren't being placed in small holes where they will catch private and intimate moments. You wouldn't start getting undressed in the middle of a hallway, because you know you are in a public area, and people are watching. So what difference does a camera make?
I mean, there's always the notion of "Big Brother" watching you, but there is a difference between public security cameras, and 'Big Brother.' Security cameras in public areas are no more harmful than a tourist taking a photo outside, or someone filming a family vacation. They'll always be the bystander in the background, unaware of what's being filmed, and who will probably be caught on film. In that case, we should ban any sort of filming.
You start having problems when the privacy laws are being side-stepped (a la the wire-tapping debate without judicial approval), but the main fact is that security cameras are in public areas. PUBLIC.
Look at London for example. Pretty much every street corner has a video camera on it, and they have no problem with it. It's not giving up a freedom, because when you step outside, you know you're in the public eye. And the only time people really look at the video captured by security cameras is when something has happened.

I think that cameras in schools are overall a good thing. I realize that they are not really monitored that efficiently and watched all the time unless something was brought to their attention. Cameras in schools can reveal thiefs and those who vandalize others property. The knowledge that cameras are in schools does not modify student behavior but can be used for safety.
