Re: can they really call video games addictive

In a way it depends on the person. I mean if you think that games are everything and can't pull yourself away from them. Then yes I think that it is addictive. Though there are people that know when to say stop and can get up and walk away from the game. Then it depends on the game too. If you have been waiting months to get a game you kinda become addicted to it till you beat it. So I believe that no games are not addictive. They just can sometimes take up a lot of time but in the end you quit playing them don't you?

If you really ask this question it's like asking if reading is addictive. If writing is addictive. If acting is addictive. If TV is addictive. Everything can be addicting but it comes down to the person in which you are talking about. It depends on if they let it take control of their lives or not.

Re: can they really call video games addictive

Yes games are very addictive. On an average I have seen most people play games for more than five hours a day and that they can't do anything while they are playing a match, for instance, until they can go eat, go to the bathroom, leave the house. Their lives revolve around gaming and competing against others to level up or improve their skills depending on the genre of game they are playing.

For my brothers are both CSS players and will play the game from 3:30pm till 11:00pm everyday unless my older brother turns the net on at 1pm and will still play till 11pm. If they ever receive 'ping' from the net downloading too much at one time they will both seriously complain till their ping has returned to normal. It seems strange to me that they will complain so much about me using the internet the same time they are playing because they don't even pay for the service so it isn't theirs.

So I would say Yes gaming is addictive and its not to a certain degree. Its more about the players own state of mind. See for some gamers they tend to get into the game way too much and its very much apart of his/her life. Where as for some its more about something to do when one is bored in their spare time and are able to control their game playing time more.

yes thats me ill play a game 24 hours straight but i dont call my addicted i call it competive since i can play on xbox live. i only do that when i dont have anything i have to do. my parents call me addicted but i do play other sports like basketball and soccer. and as of my love my life my girlfreind plays video game like i do and i dont have to pay bills so i have nothing to worry about. i belive it a certain degree if your willing to sell anything for money to get a game then your addicted but if you only talk about video games 24/7 thats a small addicton

Re: can they really call video games addictive

We can't take video game addiction the same as drug addiction...

video game addiction is more of a mental venom... as drug addiction literally reconfigures your brain and body chemicals...

I do believe Video Games are addictive. I used to be one myself.
I wasn't a huge one, I didn't base my life on them... but I still was one.

I believe thinking about video games for the sake of video games for more than a 1/3 of the day could still be considered addiction.
Like I said, it's a mental venom... it can't be considered the same as a drug addiction, whether the obvious injections or the easy tobacco...

Video Game addiction could practically be shoved in the same category as an IMMENSE germaphobia.

Why? : It disalllows you from worrying about anything else or caring about anything else. It can paralyze you to do nothing more than one process. It can affect your everyday living and make you seem like a freak... and you probably are. XD

...I'm not blaming video games for anything at all. Like I said, it's a venom. And venoms have to be absorbed by the person, correct? And seeing that a video game isn't a living entity that literally attacks you and shoves its venom inside you, this means that the person PURPOSELY absorbs this addiction.

So in other words, I blame the "addicted" and those who can "help" them.

I know what it's like, and most people here do too. It's great, it's fantastic, it's fun... and most times, it makes you feel better about yourself.
Whether you got the girl of your dreams, saved the world once again, or totally pwned someone in the face. It's awesome.

But... there's a time when it does go too far.
When all you do and think and talk about is video games... and you actually believe that beating someone in a game makes you better than they are as a living creature. (Actually, that last part, you don't need to be a Gamer to feel that way... that's just cocky and immature XD)

There's more to life than video games...
And for the addicted, there are three answers to that comment I just gave:
    1. Like What/No There Isn't/Prove It/You're Stupid/ (or some other form of denial)
    2. Yeah, but video games still are awesome.
    3. ...

The people in the #2 category are the most "curable"...
They try to be respectful and courteous, like how they were either raised to act, or how a character they liked, acts. ...because of this, they feel a more realistic guilt than #1 and #3, and even wishing that they COULD have a life.

...#3 and #1 also wish for a life, but a #2 is more willing to say it. Willing to say they're a loser and etc.

Problem is, all of them don't try to get a life (though they say they do). ...but of course, this isn't what the topic's about. Though slightly related, it'll cause more harm than good right now.

Fact is, video games are addictive, and it's not good to have ANY form of it.

Yes, some games are naturally addictive, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about becoming an ADDICT.

A game can absorb you, but you shouldn't absorb the game too much unless you're going to do something with it! And "become a programmer" isn't going to cut it, seriously.
Doesn't matter what profits are made, you're missing out in life.
And there's never an excuse for that.

I agree, they are addictive, but not THAT addictive. Some people just need a sorry ass excuse to justify thier video game habits. I'd have to say I fall in your #2 category, except I HAVE A LIFE! LOL.

I get out of the house, I have a steady job, I pay my bills... etc. I do try to squeeze in as many game hours as I can, but I DO have a social life and friends. So video games are not #1 priority with me. They used to be however. But it wasn't an addiction to the point where I had absolutely no life. Hell, most of my closest friends are avid gamers, but they still do stuff outside of the realm of gaming.

I've been hearing wild claims lately; such as, "Video games can be just as addictive as drugs, if not, worse." Do you know how stupid that sounds?! Yeah, there are times that I can't put the controller down, but that's usually when I'm at a CRITICAL point in the game, or I have to find a save point before I leave. LOL, which reminds me: Why do people get pissed at me when I say, "I'll be right with you; I just gotta find a save point." >_< They go, "URRGH! You and your damn save points!!" S***! Are you gonna save my progress???

But, I digress. There is no way that a video game can be more addictive than drugs. I've never seen people offer sex for a video game or store credit at GameStop. Only crack... >_<

I think that only after a certain degree it can be dubbed "addicitive" such as playing for days straight or otherwise neglecting things. Then again, it's the person who is playing the game's choice to play that long or something. You can make your own decisions on how to play when to play etc.

Re: can they really call video games addictive

Those people have problems to begin with if they where playing a game so long that their children died. I guess it really depends on how mental you are. I've heard of people urinating in bottles so they can keep playing and all kinds of stupid crap like that.

dancy_SAZ said that some peoples lives revolve around gaming, but her description sounds like some people I know that read books the same way. I've never heard anyone say books are addicitve.

I've always played crazy long hours laying out of school, but I never starved myself or used the bathroom on myself, I'm no fool the pause buttons there for a reason.

I really hate that games are used as a shield so scum will have a defense in court.

Alice Cooper has a song called Wicked Young Man. In it there is a line that goes something like this "Its not the games that I play or the movies I watch, I'm just a wicked young man."

I am female and I hate Video Games. I can't beat them, and I don't try to anymore. I gave up a long time ago. The last game I found addicting was Super Mario.

I think my Belly is more important them some game. If I hear the baby crying I am going o get my butt up and go look whats wrong. Its not like your going to piss your pants playing a video game cause you don't want to pause the game. Spare me!

They have no right blaming something like this. You have to get up and eat and go to the bathroom, and I think those bills have to be paid to have the TV still running too, as well as that computer. Those 2 took a break to make a baby, I think they take others. -_- what a load of BS!

Everyone wants to point a finger.
