Those people have problems to begin with if they where playing a game so long that their children died. I guess it really depends on how mental you are. I've heard of people urinating in bottles so they can keep playing and all kinds of stupid crap like that.

dancy_SAZ said that some peoples lives revolve around gaming, but her description sounds like some people I know that read books the same way. I've never heard anyone say books are addicitve.

I've always played crazy long hours laying out of school, but I never starved myself or used the bathroom on myself, I'm no fool the pause buttons there for a reason.

I really hate that games are used as a shield so scum will have a defense in court.

Alice Cooper has a song called Wicked Young Man. In it there is a line that goes something like this "Its not the games that I play or the movies I watch, I'm just a wicked young man."

What is an addiction?

Some of the typical symptoms of alcoholism are a longing for alcohol (duh), obsessive thinking about what your next drink will be, where/when you will get it, etc, drinking alone, etc.

Now, let's apply those to video games: A longing to play video games, okay, obsessive thinking about what you will play when you get home, or wherever and when you will get to play, or playing video games alone.

The last one is a little fuzzy, I mean, I play all sorts of video games alone, but I don't call myself addicted. I WILL say however that there is something to be said for longing to play a game like WoW or EQ and obsessing over it, sacrificing schoolwork because escapism is so much better, and why not? No friends? No problem! Now you are a level 50 Warlock who is now useful on raids and has tons of friends!

Can you become chemically addicted, no, but psychologically, I would reason to say yes.

I think it is important to differentiate that it is not as exteme of a problem as people like Jack Thompson would have non-gamers believe, but it most certainly can be a problem, as evidenced by Everquest suicides and WoW related kidney failure.

I would say no Video Games aren't "addicting" and I'm a video gamer. But really Video games are more of an obssession. Unfourtunatly in this day and age they use the word addiction to describe anything. The definition of addiction is compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; broadly : persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful. In other words you can't put it down. Where as an obssession is a persistent disturbing preoccupation with an often unreasonable idea or feeling; broadly : compelling motivation <an obsession with profits> and that's just the regular dictonary meanings.

But then again whatever you are "addicted" to has to do some harm. Sure video games do some "social harm" it's not addicting unless you are physically dependent on it or psychologicaly dependent on it. And I checked wiki's examples for psychologiacal and Physical dependece and video games are not listed under either but it is an obsession because so many people are plain out OBSESSED with video games and anime, because you can either stop and put down the controller to a) go to the bathroom or b) eat. Unlike drugs like nicotin, alcohal, heroin, coke, crack, LSD, and PCP you cannot put it down because you are Physically dependent on them.

the parents are responsibe for the action if their ingoring someone and that person died. family comes before games and the parent should be in a place where they get help to look after their child

There is a diffrence between addiction and obession. You cannot be addicted to video games like you could drugs.

I dont think video games are addictive i mean iv been playing video games ever since i was small and its not like all that time i was growing up i did nothing but play and that some what goes for now to its the adults who allow their children to play for long hours most parrents dont care cause they dont want to hear a damn thing off of them which i think is wrong anyway my point is video games cant be addictive cause they're isn't that addictive property to stimulate the brain

video games are insanely addictive........they allow u to be put into "a new universe" were u can do things that u cant do here..........which is millions of ppls dreams........

now should they put a ban on video games............that would just create a more of problem then the problem they have now..........

If video games were truly addictive, then why hasn't there been like inpatient gamer rehab clinics or interventions for gamers? Because when it comes down to the very essence of the matter... It's not an addiction. People with a problem with video games and thier massive amount of gamer-groupies say things like, "They're an addiction," so they can do stupid things like give us game ratings (like it's a f'ing movie) and ban certain games. It's just another way to call us something we're not--addicts.

I used to be a drug addict and when I hear that people are calling gaming an addiction, I get pissed. Addictions aren't fun. Neither is breaking the habit!! I play video games to get away from the stress in my life. Yes, I DO play them alot! And I'm damn proud of it too!! I'm one of the few people in my circle of friends that can say that they're better than most people at fighting games, one of the few people who can say the've beatin certain games that friends couldn't. I think that's an accomplishment. If gaming is so addictive, then why did I read in Game Informer a few months back that gaming is so huge that tournaments and such may have a chance of being televised like football and other sports. If gaming is so addictive, then how is it that video games make up for a good chunk of jobs in this country (IE: game design and such)??

Addiction... I scoff at the notion. Here I go: "Scoff scoff scoff!" LOL.

Really though. People need to open thier eyes. Yes, there are gamers who need to go outside and do something for a change--like getting a social life--BUT THAT'S NOT ADDICTION! Some people just need a release of stress that only the glorious video game console can provide. It's not like meth or anything.
