Alot of you have good points but they aren't really talking about us. They're talking about these Everquest players.
Heres a video of what I'm talking about.
YouTube - World of Warcraft Addict

Besides no one is going to sell their mother's furnitures because they didn't have enough money to play the arcade game to beat Akuma on Street Fighter VS. SNK2

Addiction is a commitment you make to yourself. These people were just plain crazy that they were so addicted to that game that they couldn't take care of their kids. I myself like video games very much. But I can stop whenever I want to. Calling video games addictive is kinda odd for me but I've seen and heard things and it's pretty crazy.

They say, "I will die for my country." I never hear them say, "I will kill for my country."

Viseo Games are a thing, and it's possible, to be addicted to any thing (toast comes to mind, everyone hates the toast addicts, you can see them walking down the street, with a thin trace of jam on their lips and crumbs all over their clothes, bustling from diner to diner looking for their next fix) It's just easier to become addicted to videogames because, quite frankly, they're fun. People rarely become addicted to things that they don't like, and since video games are awesome enough to earn one of the largest youth followings. Thus, parenting groups are making a big deal out of it. It wasn't so long ago that you couldn't turn on the tv without a child advocacy commercial telling you to turn it off, but they've moved on to new prey, computers are becoming the same way. As long as here are powerful medium of entertainment, those who are dedicated to it will be called addicts for the political effect of the term.
