Yes, but this was before Germany invaded Poland and started World War II (1939), and long before the world descovered the horrors that the Nazi's had commited as well.

You also have to take into account that the media and world communication was not as advanced as it is now.

Are you bitter because Toronto didn't get the bid??

Joking aside, you can't put a first world standard on a second world country. Even in this years olympics, some countries still don't have a female participant. I agree with you that some of the policies are very questionable, but you said China doesn't deserve it is a big slap to the face of every Chinese around the world. Olympics always try to steer clear of politics and that is their ideal.

China is not where US and Canada is yet. Considering the technology and the sheer size of the country I think it is reasonable. Just think about how many crap AMVs and video blogs we put online. There will be a day when tax payers demand the same rights we are enjoying now. <--- line stolen from an article I read recently.

Protesters are free to do what they want, but I have no respect for those that try to jack the torch or douse it. not....cool....I think it's very easy to jump onto the bandwagon without knowing all the facts. I for one don't know all the facts, but I know enough.

    Re: China and the olympics

the problem i really have is when they tried to put out the torch, thats about it, which would have been worse for which ever country actually had done it if the suceded. Although they got more cheers than expected when they entered the arena.

everything else is China's business, when there ready to change their ways thats all good for them. they have to work out their problems like every other counrty has and is doing. Chinas already PO'd about the tourch, and protesters, then hearing what Bush had to say.
Other countries would be just as mad if your being critized by people who do not live, or have anything to do with their land. Which has already been proven when people speak.

the olympics have been going smoothly without any problems or such, which would have already been done in the begining when the french team had entered the arena. If china had not been considered for the olympics they could have taken offense and something bad could be going on right now, instead of the world unity olympics.

the only thing i think this spotlight has done is bring more viwers in than the games have gotten in years, which is a good thing

do u think that china might change some of it's policies after the olympics because of all the bad rep it's getting, or do you think that the protesting isn't going to get any where at all.

    Re: China and the olympics

The reason why China wanted the Olympics held because they wanted to show the world how amazing they are and blah blah blah... Yeah the Chine’s never fallowed up on a single thing they said, but the reason as to why we, and when I say we I mean the global community is because we KNEW sh*t was going to hit the fan and that THEIR own people will finely be able to have their voices heard and for the rest of the world for that matter to go in and talk to the Chinese Gov about Human rights, (Which they are apposed.) Better treatment and to free Tibet (Which they appose.) As well as many other global issues (Which they ALSO appose.) Which translates into.... "Your being f$@king "A" holes so stop dragging your feet and being selfish cry baby b*tch!!"... And sense it’s in the global spot light, China can’t do a damn thing about it because if they did, they would be in some deep trouble.

Yes the Olympic Games are about global community and togetherness but it’s also about having peoples voices heard.

But how many people have to suffer before China is 'ready to change their ways'? Is it right to say that, its ok that people suffer now because they are going to 'change there ways' later or when they are ready?

We have a right to criticise China mainly because we know one thing - It's not right for any government to use force to oppress the people of its own country. It is not right that people don't have a choice about things that affect them directly as well as there families. And as humans we have that right of free will - to be able to choose and not be prosecuted for it.

We like to say that politics stays out of sports, in reality it doesn't. Plus should sports ever be put above human rights? imo no it shouldn't

but as for the Olympics, I think that its good that China got it. In a way all this publicity that it is getting is showing the world about what China is about the good and the bad, like aceman said.

well unfortunately the bad has been overshadowing the good lately. Even before the olympics started, the chinese government simply screwed themselves over by promising to not do anything bad (ok i dont know exactly what it was but i do remember something like this) and yet the banned an entire country from showing off their best, and they then banned people for supporting the protest for darfur.

Then during the olympics, murder occurs, the Spanish offend the Chinese and all hell breaks loose.

It seems that for all China's glory, and one very impressive flag chain, the government's past mistakes and people protesting have shadowed the fact that this should be a time of great unity.
    Why hello there!

Yeah the murder thing sucks big time and on an American on top of that. I was surprised the US Media didn't blow up the whole thing and have a field day with that. And the whole Spanish slant eye thing, the Chinese were cool about that even thought I was sure they were offended they were willing to let that slide and call it "humorous" to minimize the amount of controversy. Very selective reporting when you consider how very little exposure that story got. I didn't even know of the incident until I watched the olympics recaps.
