Re: Cutting art from schools!

You do have a good point, Ms. Rebel, i'm not doubting that! and i certainly don't put it past the American government to do that... but then again, i don't think it happens that much to cause the cutting of art classes... school board members are pretty spineless, so i think for the most part they comply with what the government says and all they really do is fuss and fum in disagreement...

Agreed. The government may have a law in place saying that schools have to give up student info to military recruiters, but I don't think that that's why art is getting cut in this state. I'm not doubting that it actually happens--in fact it makes perfect sense to me--but I think it's more or less the state of Minnesota being very materialistic.

Over the last five or six years, this state has built a new arena, a shopping mall/movie theater, a Hard Rock cafe, and a plethora of other buildings that do nothing but spend tax dollars that could be going towards education and keeping art in schools.

I think that it's just a matter of time before teachers in this area go on strike; because I doubt that all students are interested in art, and the ones that are interested are vastly outnumbered by kids who think that high school sports are more important.

Re: Cutting art from schools!

I hated visual art, I just couldn't do any of the things they asked me to do and so I've started to dislike art, but maybe it happens like this just in my country or just with me, the thing is that visual art is good as long as they don't push you to do art in a maner that is comon, as long as you can expess yourself.
I think it's no good to cut arts from schools, arts help children in developing, but I think you have to change the way you're teaching arts, to make it more interesting and usefull too, at least in Latvia...

Art is life!! I feel like kids--no, people in general--learn better when art is involved. Kids love art! I love art! I learned more in art and music classes than I did in any of the basic classes. You can learn basic math through music, and you can learn geometry through visual art!

I feel like we should keep art in classes, what do you think?
I totally agree...With out Art and Music and what-not...Kids would have no style or imagitive stuff....plus they couldnt dance!

LOL, I can see it now: A bunch of unimaginative, uncoordinated kids; bumbling around with no rhythm at their school dance. ^_^ Ha ha, we're doomed if they don't keep art in school! Have you seen some of these younger kids these days?

It's not a matter of art being hard. It's a matter of art costing money and--in the government's eyes--costing too much money. If it were a matter of art being too hard, most kids wouldn't have art until their late teens. But art comes as naturally as the leaves come from the tree.

It's one of the easiest subjects to grasp, and it teaches a whole new level of problem solving and self-expression.

I don't think it is costing too much money, but whether or not it is even worth that much money. Like you state, art is the easiest subject to grasp.

What you say about teaches a whole new level or problem solving and self-expression, what doesn't allow you to reach a level related to that? Seriously, what doesn't allow you to really tap into your inner self and express your emotions in some form. Art class at a lower level usually does not involve a large portion of poetry, writing/literature, major historical facts and/or background. Most people can't really comprehend the so called level adjustment from finger painting to charcoal and collage.

It is more entertainment than learning, and if you hold up text book knowledge to that inner self stuff crap and compare it with $ signs, people would laugh. You can find yourself or what not, but you won't get paid for it with a serious salary. If there is any profession that hinders your ability to make a profit or recieve a salary, that artistic field is probably at the back.

Get into psych if you want to learn about a human and their self-expressions and problem solving on a deep level, or take art classes in college or in the later teens.

You see, that's the problem with people these days. You fail to see the importance of art in our lives. Without art, we wouldn't have jack. Architecture isn't a trade, it's an art! Without it, we'd be living in caves, or huts, or some crater or something. Painting: Paintings/Portraits were like early photos. Without painting we wouldn't have a single clue as to what any historical figures looked like. Without the painter--for all we know--George Washington could be BLACK!!

Without poetry and fiction, (yes writing is an art, I won't leave it out) we wouldn't have books interesting enough to hold our attention long enough to enjoy the writing and--mainly wiith kids unless you're a slow adult--learn new words; build our vocabulary. Without music and dance, we wouldn't have any rhythm and--in most cases--little to no coordination. Don't tell me that art isn't important, or that you can't become a better person without it; because art BUILT our society--not just here but WORLDWIDE!!! You can find art in caves, pyramids, scriptures, history books, dictionaries, buildings, cars... Everything that we own, use, read--maybe even wipe our asses with--revolves around ART! *rrr...*
