The girl, now 16, had testified that her mother asked a friend in 2004 to shave the girl's head to make her unattractive to boys and later held her down for the piercing.

A jury deliberated for about three hours before deciding the mother's actions didn't involve punishment or malicious intent, or cause permanent damage or disfigurement.

The 39-year-old woman, whose name is being withheld to protect her daughter's identity, could have faced up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the charges.

The girl was not in court for the verdict. Her guardian declined comment.

"She was trying to protect me, but it hurt me," the girl testified earlier this week. "It not only hurt me physically, but it hurt me mentally. ... That's emotionally scarring. That's physical abuse."

Prosecutors said the mother called on a friend to shave the girl's head and do the piercing after realizing that she had been having sex, including with the mother's boyfriend.

Defense attorneys told jurors that the mother had trouble with her rebellious daughter and that the girl agreed to the piercing to help rebuild her mother's trust.

Child welfare officials were called after the girl became infected from the piercing.

Tammy Meredith, 43, who did the piercing in her home, was sentenced to a year in jail for her role. An arrest warrant has been issued for the mother's boyfriend on allegations he had sex with the girl.

Now isn't that just all kinds of F#$@ up??? Don't ya think that parents should simply talk to thier kids about things of this nature? I can understand wanting to punish your child as discipline, but that only goes so far!

What's your opinion? Do you think the mother was right or wrong? Do you think she should've got more jail time? I do! If my mom did somethin' like that to one of my sisters, I'd have a friggin' cow!!

No self-respecting parent would do that to their child! That's not protection, that's abuse!

@.@ thats kinda too far... my my... i dont agree she should do that to her even if it's to protect her...

To protect dont mean you have to hurt the one you want to protect...plus.. the way she take things are wrong..(the mum)

Well if it's grounding the girl.. its not that bad... but this is too far... @.@

What I don't understand is parents hang up on kids having sex. I mean I totally understand you don't want your sixteenyear old out there getting pregnant. Get her on birth control then. Don't pierce her in places people don't see! Jesus. That's emotional tourture. She pierced her for having sex with her boyfriend, not for having sex in general! She was being vindictive childish and mean. I think she shuld have gone to jail. At least the poor baby ain't still with her crazy mama.

Yah, I agree with you two. That lady was just pissed because her daughter probably got more play from the BF than she did, LOL. Either way, that's not right.

And the boyfriend is a dirty old man! He's probably like 40-something, messin' with 16 year old back! LOL!

I think someone said in an older thread that a mom in UK got arrested for... What was it?... Oh! For cutting off her daughters clitoris, so she couldn't feel pleasure during sex. (I think that's what happened) I know that nobody's dad would do that!

Somebody's dad would beat up the BF and scare the daughter outta havin' sex. LOL. Mothers are just crazy, I think.

That could be a religious thing though. There are certian religions that believe in circumsison of their girls os that they don't recieve physical pleasure from sex. They even sew the opening up. So that when a girl gets married a man knows his wifes a virgin because he has to CUT her open.

Excuse my French, but Bullsh**.

I would appeal if i was the state. This is clearly physical abuse and torture. The low life white trash only did it because her daughter banged her boyfriend. Shes probably gotten old and fat. She clearly did it out of revenge, this for her protection is a dam cover.

That went way to far,to go as far as that shows there is some thing seriously wrong with that mother.The mother should have just talked to her daughter instead, but then again it could have bin just the mother getting back at her daughter for sleeping with her boyfriend.

The court sent that friend that helped to jail for a year for helping out,but the mother got away with nothing WTF !? that is far from fair.Just goes to show you that the justice system is far from fair and needs to fix'd.If it were up to me the mother,the friend and the boyfriend would get locked up for at least 5 year for there crimes.

To go say its not "actions didn't involve punishment or malicious intent, or cause permanent damage or disfigurement" thats a load of crap.The girl is going to remember this for the rest of her life.

It's a tribe in Africa or some such actually. Not a cult. It's the religion of a whole people. Not just a crazy religious faction. I think some muslums do that too though. Which would I think be considered a cult...it's a faction of a religious belief. But this isn't JUST a religious thing. It's a society thing.
