Sit your butt down, don't change the nation, because your not from here. But as for the land of the Free. It should help others trying to fit in here. I was told to Learn Spanish because its the second language. of American. English is the official language, but it has many delects(sp) When we go there, we don't look for a English town. He learn there language. But I don't think they should slam the door on ones Face cause they can't speak a language. Thats Awful, and that feeling is bad, but that person should have had someone with them. As for a America, being the worlds "Everyones Welcome" <- I Think you should live up to it. Many languages are taught in school, but we can't keep up. I am sorry if one have trouble with English, but it happens, but there should be no sign on the door saying. "English Speaking only" |

Language Log: Senate votes for official English The most recent thing I read about it was in september, whether or not they voted since then I don't know. It's not going to prohibit anybody from speaking their own language, but it will help businesses and such and kinda encourage people in our country to learn english, seeing as how apparently 12 million don't know how to speak it. | |

I think that defeats the purpose of the U.S. I thought we were suppose to be the country that learns many languages and is accepting of any race or religion. I really wish we could go back to ideas of our fore fathers and learn to accept change. A little Spanish never hurt anyone. All you need to know is "Hola, Como te llamas? Me llamo Morgan, Como estas? or a little french, Esque vusette American? A few phrases here and there is very beneficial to ourselves and others. It promotes understanding between EVERYONE.

Upcoming Legend | Re: English Only? I don't know how much English the customers needs to know, but I think most at least know some. You can't expect to serve a customer well if the communication between them and the employee is broken. Can't just walk into a English speaking restaurant and started ordering in German. The owner is in the borderline of being a faggot if he expects every single customer to speak fluent English and won't serve you if you don't look/speak like a English speaking American. |

![]() ![]() Credits: 3,583 | Re: English Only? If somebody comes in a restaurant and speaks no english at all, how the heck are they going to order anyways, assuming no one is there to translate. It's not like restaurants have interpretors on the sideline. The only reason I will be against this restaurant is due to traveling foreigners. If he were to refuse to serve them just because they don't speak good english, then that is clear nonsense. But for people to live in this country and not know a little english, come on. |

And for someone to integrate deeper into society, they need to know some form of spanish. Whether certain Americans see it or not, or country is rapidly moving twords a high level of spanish speaking citizens. It is good to be bilingual in a time like this, for the simple fact of getting a higher paying job.

![]() ![]() Credits: 59,274 | Re: English Only? How can a person say, "My language is better than yours?" Look at the world we live in: Welsh television, Spanish "telenovelas," Japanese graphic novels, even New York's Coney Island has Cyrillic (the Russian alphabet) everywhere. We live in a mixed world; therefore, people speak a mixture of languages. Personally, I believe that you ought to be able to get what you want across the language barrier (if you are visiting or living in a country with a language that is not English, be sure you are able to tell them what you need in their own idiom). Even if all you know is a sentence: * "Rwy'n dod o Loegr. Diod a bawb." ~ Welsh (I come from England, drinks all around.) * "Perdoname, mujeriego. Soy un hombre." ~ Spanish (Pardon me, womanizer. I am a man.) * "Ittai nan nanda, kono mushi wa." ~ Japanese (Excuse me, there's a fly in my soup.) * "Voulez-vous cesser de me cracher dessus pendant que vous parlez?!" ~ French (Would you stop spitting on me while you're talking?!) * "K sozhaleniyu, ya poka ne govoryu po russki." ~ Russian (Unfortunately, I cannot yet speak Russian.) See? Useful phrases . . .

lolI will have to remember these...Anyway Maybe we should all learn latin. Most languages are derived from it anyway. Then we could travel anywhere we want and know that if we dont know the language of the country at least they will understand latin. The entire world could communicate this way and everyone would be considerd bilingual.
