I understand that we are diverse, heck I'm bilingual too (although it's german), but I just don't want it to get to the point that the main language of america is spanish because the new immigrants decided not to assimilate into our society. You wanna speak a different language, fine, but why should the current american citizens have to adjust to learning new languages if the new immigrants don't want to learn ours.............english. |

I mean, almost all my family is mexican but they took the time to learn english so they won't have to go through hardships. Yes, america is the melting pot. But at least learn some english to get you through all the things you have to face in this country.

| Why so serious? | Re: English Only? My opinion on this, on what the owner said, is that it's perfectly true. If people come to live in America, then they should learn how to speak English. It's only smart to do that. That's like me going to Japan... I'd have to know how to speak Japanese. I'm not going to order something speaking English. First off, that's just stupid, because the Japanese person might not even know what I'm saying..(but knowing the japanese and how they work, I'm pretty sure they'll know what I'm saying), Second, it's rude to the Japanese. You come to their country and then speak English?! Ha. But that's not the case here. Anyways, I believe there is no problem with people thinking that. If foreigners come to the US..they should know how speak English. Point Blank. |

Newbie | Re: English Only? Yeah you have a point, But English is pretty hard to learn. I asked my friend who spoke spanish how hard it was to learn and he said it was one of the most difficult things he had to do. But he was glad he learned english so he could talk to us with out useing his brother who spoke both spanish and english. So in the end I dont see why people get mad anyway, they should be glad to learn English.

| The Bad Guy | Re: English Only? What about immigrant owned buisnesses? There's a chinese restaraunt down the street and wouldn't ya know the cooks are Chinese. Should I have to learn Chinese to be able to eat there? I think if I had to I could use enough sign language to get my point across. And that brings up another question what about the deaf, should they be Bilingual? English and Spanish signs? If you want pancakes point at the picture or at someone elses meal you know the old "I'll have what their having". It's not hard, well unless your picky. I could order a steak no problem but a kosher steak, I'm not sure. But this small barrier shouldn't be enough to turn hungry people away.

Newbie | Re: English Only? Ooooh! PsiKnot! Really great points! I was just going to throw my 2 cents in and say I agree, you should know SOME English before moving or visiting the U.S (It just makes things so much easier).... but then I saw your two points! I think that immigrant owned businesses are ok and I will take your Chinese restraunt for example... I know a LITTLE chinese. I could go in and probably order from the menu well enough! But thing is, most people don't. I consider it fun to learn new things... even if that is just how to say one more word in another language. No... I don't think that we should have to learn the whole language to go eat in their restraunt because we enjoy that type of food... but it just makes things so much easier when you know at least enough of the language to say Hello, I would like blah blah blah. Please and Thank you. Ya see? Hm... deaf people. Well there is always simply writing things down! But I guess that is too simple an answer to satisfy haha! I really can't comment too much on that one because I didn't even know that other languages had different forms of sign language! I just assumed it was all the same. *Scolds self* Bad ME! Guess what! One person could come in here and completely destroy this whole topic with four words! Those being "I am a translator"! Haha! There are people who's job it is to simply translate. Of course they aren't ALL that common, they are still around. Point is, if I went to... say... Mexico (I have never wanted to learn Spanish *Shrugs*), and took someone, maybe a friend, who spoke spanish very well, I could have them order for me! People would probably look at me weird but hey... I get my tacos. Well... this whole topic brings me to wonder. Language... spoken and written... It really seems weak doesn't it? Like such a feeble way to express our feelings? I mean... when you are around someone enough you begin to connect with them. There are some of my friends I can just look at without saying a single word and they could interpret it as a paragraph ya know? But yeah... just the ramblings of a weird teenager is all!

![]() ![]() Credits: 297 | Re: English Only? Well if you live in the United States you MUST know english if you want to get around. The same goes for other countries. I'm currently attemping to learn Japanese because every summer I go to Nagasaki and its hard to get around not knowing the langauge. So I believe its mandatory to know the langauge of the country you want to live in.

![]() Credits: 17,113 | Re: English Only? Well, I am an immigrant and I agree and desagree with you. Agree in the way that as immigrants, we know that if we move to another country, at least we should know the language of the country to be able to comunicate... but not more than that. It does not mean that we should let go our roots... if an "american" goes to our countries they do not always know how to speak our language and our people is forced to know english EVEN IN OUR COUNTRY!!!!! I think that it has to apply to both sides and not be a one side situation. So then when an "american" goes to one of our restaurants let's "not serve him/her food cos he/she does not speak our language" That is discrimination.
