FCC is getting rid of Christian radio.

I recently heard that FCC is planning on making Christian radio stations play
standard radio. Meaning that they will have to play what everyone else
plays like My Humps and talk about Britney Spears, they will no longer play
any Christian songs. But there is one thing people can do to stop whats
going on and thats to sign a petition on your local Christian radio wbsites.
But what I want to know is how do you feel about what FCC is doing and
would you sign the petition or would you be glad to hear that Christian radio
will be no more. Please reply back and don't make this into me just trying
to be one of those Crusaders trying to rid the world of evil or me trying to
get my way selfishly because to be honest I love rock 'n roll music but I
also like Christian music.

Grumble Grumble Grumble

Actually, it is very very unlikely that this is true... (have any web links that show otherwise?!?!) just on Freedom of Speech, and Separation of Church and State grounds. Trying to have a discussion and debate about an obvious falsehood isn't much of a discussion and debate....

Re: FCC is getting rid of Christian radio.

Modern Myth

snopes.com: Petition to Ban Religious Broadcasting
0031 - The O'hare radio hoax

FCC-Religious Broadcast Rumor Denied
Quote:
A rumor has been circulating since 1975 that the late Madalyn Murray O'Hair, a widely known, self-proclaimed atheist, proposed that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) consider limiting or banning religious programming.

These rumors are untrue. In December 1974, Jeremy D. Lansman and Lorenzo W. Milam filed a petition (RM-2493) asking the FCC to inquire into the operating practices of stations licensed to religious organizations, and not to grant any new licenses for new noncommercial educational broadcast stations until the inquiry had been completed. The FCC denied this petition on August 1, 1975. Ms. O'Hair was not a sponsor of this petition.

Since that time, the FCC has received mail and telephone calls claiming that Ms. O'Hair started the petition and that the petition asked for an end to religious programs on radio and television. Such rumors are false. The FCC has responded to numerous inquiries about these rumors and advised the public of their falsehood. There is no federal law that gives the FCC the authority to prohibit radio and television stations from broadcasting religious programs.

For general information on other telecommunication-related issues, you may contact the FCC's Consumer & Governmental Affairs Bureau by e-mail at fccinfo@fcc.gov, or at the address below. You may also call the FCC's Consumer Center at 1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322) voice or 1-888-TELL-FCC (1-888-835-5322) TTY.

Re: FCC is getting rid of Christian radio.

Alright its something called localism and FCC is now going to make Christian
radio stations will have to air the others opinions which is fine with me but I
find that when the do this theres a lot of bleeping of the words. And it means
that people are worried about it strangling the Christian media. And also
that they want them to answer to community boards that could wind up
changing the programming you hear on radio stations. But basicly what
they are trying to do is inforce the fairness doctrine. Currently FCC is
required to have a period of public comment before proceeding.
How I know all this is a email from my local Christian radio station.

Re: FCC is getting rid of Christian radio.

At most the FCC could only limit what could be said on Christian radio, meaning limiting such things as opposition to gay marriage under the guise of hate speech, etc... either way it wouldn't happen, too many people would oppose it.

Re: FCC is getting rid of Christian radio.

Grumble Grumble Grumble

Now the 'fairness' doctrine is based on the assumption that the government controlled 'airwaves' are 'owned' by the public at large, and as part of the radio frequency licensing agreement, the radio station must do something useful for the public at large, (which includes the non-Christian radio audience...). This of course means that a Christian radio station cannot limit itself to a strictly Christian broadcast agenda. It has to do something useful to the community (such as local news broadcasts, weather & traffic reports, talk radio programs, etc...) It also means that if they allow political advertising on their station, they can't deny selling airtime to a candidate that the station considers non-Christian. Is making a radio station do things like this really such a bad thing???

Re: FCC is getting rid of Christian radio.

Most stations do the local traffic just to abide by that (what Len was talking about) and frankly I don't think it is a bad thing...other than cutting into music time...however I am very much against censorship...if someone owns a radio station they should be allowed to put whatever they want on it. I don't have to listen to that station if I don't like what I hear and at the same time if they don't have people tunning in then it won't last long.

Either way Christian radio isn't going away anymore than rock or rap or country. It is a genre and as long as people tune in, it will be around.

Grumble Grumble Grumble

Still, it really depends on what you mean by 'censorship'... Are you talking about censorship OF Radio Stations, or censorship BY Radio Stations. the 'Fairness' doctrine was put into place because of past abuses by syndicated media trying to force their opinions on the public and the ballot box. Part of this is also the laws that restrict a person or corporation from owning all (or a large percentage of) the newspapers, radio and TV stations in a region, or combinations of the above.
