Freedom vs. Security strikes again: new Internet legislation from Congress

A new bill is arising in Congress that would give the president emergency power over certain parts of the Internet.

New Bill Gives Obama ‘Kill Switch’ To Shut Down The Internet

Video - Breaking News Videos from CNN.com

Clearly we have an age-old case of security vs. freedom being brought into question. Should the government have this kind of power over such an influential part of the media? Would the passing of this bill lead more bills meant to regulate the Internet?

Clearly the Internet is a new theater of battle in this day and age, but are the risks high enough that we should allow the government the ability to control certain elements of it? Let the discussion begin!

Why doesn't it surprise me that that Lieberman has his name on this?

Restricting the internet will cripple the multi-TRILLION dollar industry that the internet created.

Freedom of Speech advocates are going to be fuming over this, this is a draconian measure. Swatting a fly with a sledgehammer.

I don't think it will pass. But it makes the liberals and democrats angry and that pleases me greatly. If the bill. Gets shut down I hope it gets reintroduced.

Ok first of all, that picture of the back of Obama's head looking at that screen is funny.

And wow, I think they are going too far. Talk about being sheltered from the truth, its sounds like thats what they want to achieve.

Sounds like its going a bit to far. If it were to go ahead, I'd be worried about the abuse of such power.

Not that I know much about internet and technology, but surely there is another way of protecting against cyber terrorists that wouldn't impinge on freedom of speech/internet?

I just don't think that they understand just how much of an impact shutting down the internet in just the US would have.

It would effect the entire world economy. Think about it, how does the world trade stocks? Through the internet, its how the exchanges talk to each other now. And where does most of the world do its trading? The US.

Then you have to think about how many online stores that are owned by companies outside of the US host their sites on servers located in the US. If they shut the internet down, then they lose out money because of an issue that doesn't even effect their country, and they wouldn't even get compensation because they aren't a US company.

I thought the economic implications were pretty hefty too, because above all else we're a country obsessed with money. If anything the government control would hurt, not help us against a cyber terrorist attack. Plus the bill helps block against foreign countries, how many countless attacks have happened in our own country? If a hacker, a really good hacker wants something, they're going to get it, you won't be able to stop them.

Think about it, if there's already been an attack, seizing up control and basically stopping certain sites won't solve the problem, it will make it worse for more people if anything. And if a person simply wants to threaten a large-scale attack on a site or company, all of a sudden the government stops traffic and sure the terrorist can't get in, but neither can anyone else, and there's still a problem with that.

The power faces abuse by both the terrorists it would supposedly subdue, as well as the government having yet another resource to get information on everybody, not just alleged terrorists.
