The other day I was talking to someone about bands. Well after awhile I mentioned that I am in a band. Then he told me that my band sucks. I told him that he had'nt even heard my band's music. Then I asked him why and he said "Because its not famous. Its a 'Garage Band'." His opinion was already decided that my band sucks because we're not famous. What is everybody's opinion on this matter?

To make it simple, that person is a complete moron.
You should try testing this person. Let him hear different songs, some made by more established artists (preferably the ones he doesn't know) and some made by 'garage bands'.
Ask him to separate the two kinds and if he can't do it you have proof that he was just talking out of his ignorant ass.

I'm thinking that this is another imaginary-persecution incident related to my closing a previous thread announcing the devistating break-up of your 1 year-old band by saying something to the effect of:

"This is personal and belongs in your journal. I'm pretty sure that most people here don't know anything about your garage band or particularly care that it's breaking up."

Right. When Im old enough Im going to re-form my band. And we are going to release our first album, The Red Twilight. We really hope to someday become a real band. We disbanded because we are to busy right now.

Hmm..well, perhaps what they are saying is more along the line of thinking that the local high school band makes terrible music because the Nobuo Uematsus and Jeremy Soules of the world make them look like rubble. I don't defend that view point, but I can see the logic. What seems fairly ignorant is that they would judge the music without even hearing it.

I never heard your band but I've heard some garage bands that are better than the mainstream crap out there. Just because you never tried it doesn't mean its bad. This happens to alot bands. No one wants to hear someone isn't famous. That discourages alot of new sounds and talent.

You can't realy judge a band before listening to their music, that makes no sence. You don't have to be famous to play good music, i mean half the stuff out there realy isn't that great anyway. I am also a musician and I wouldn't be offended if someone said my music sucked before listening to it. I mean if they haven't herd it they realy don't know how good or bad it sounds. Also why would their opinion matter what matters is what you and your other band members think of your music.

It depends on the band and on the degree of "sucking," but in general most garage bands are just that: garage bands.

I have several friends in their own bands. They're good players of their instrument. They have fun jamming with each other, and everyone likes hearing them play, but at the end of the day, they're just a garage band. Nothing is to be expected of them as far as to compare them to anything beyond a "garage band." They don't play for their future as a band, they play because they love playing music.

That said, every band has to start somewhere, right? I'm sure there are plenty of bands out there who not only write their own songs, but play them expertly. But then what? Playing awful, bad, decent, good, excellent doesn't change the fact that they're still a garage band.
