It's not digital cable, its digital TV broadcasts free for the taking for anyone with a UHF Antenna, a digital tuner, and a digital display (up to and including HDTV 1920 x 1200 60 Hz Interlaced). The deadline for the Digital TV conversion was announced written into law back in 2006, with the intention to convert to pure Digital TV announced several years before that, (in 2002), so its not exactly a new thing. Its not a cable box it a converter box. You put a digital antenna on your roof and the converter box picks up that signal, and translates the digital signal to analog. Then its pumped into your standard tv.
Those that have a HDTV already wont be affected, as they have cable or satellite. In which they have a special HDTV cable box that gives them a HD picture. Though they have to pay extra for it.
I should be ok for a while as i have cable. I just hope they continue to provide the analog signal. Hate to have to shell out for a new HDTV, a dam HD box, and HD service.
From the commercial I saw yesterday, cable companies such as Time Warner Cable covered the digital switch with the new boxes. If you don't have an up to date box just call the company. They should replace it for free.
