Olympic Games Too American?
It was recently on the news that the Olympic Games are no longer going to be allowing Baseball to be played after this year. Why? Because the other countries are complaining about it being “too American”. What do you guys think about this? What do you think will happen if the athletes start to protest? And if we’re coming up on World War III, will this be the last Olympic Games?
Re: Olympic Games Too American?
1. We are not going to come up on WWIII, and even if we did it wouldn’t end the Olympics because it survived WWII and WWIII if it ever came around would still be fought with conventional means and not nuclear weapons.
2. I know many countries that would protest against the ban of base ball because many countries love base ball. It may be American but that would be like banning polvolting and discus throwing because it is to Greek. Base ball is big in Britain, Japan, Germany, and yes even in China, not to mention a bunch of other countries.
Re: Olympic Games Too American?
Biggest countries to get hurt from this are the Latin countries. USA rarely wins the gold if I'm right since they only send college and minor league kids over anyways. And to help you get the facts straight, it will only be gone for the next two Olympics and will have a chance to make a come back determine by the voting by the people at the IOC. This is a way allow different sports to be part of the olympic games.
Re: Olympic Games Too American?
its deffo not the last but too be honest baseball is tooo americain is right its not like they put up gelic football ( yes real football not that old soccer carry on)
of if they did it would be tooo irish and whatnot...
Re: Olympic Games Too American?
Way too American, these games are. I haven't seen a single event on television that we possibly WON'T medal in. Fencing, soccer, judo, etc. Unless I'm not watching at the right time, I can't ever see what I wanna see cuz everyone here wants to see the US medal in something.
Re: Olympic Games Too American?
Well saying it is "too one country" is a bit unfair. all of the events have been in many different countries for decades, and many people besides americans have won in them. there's no point in calling out one event because it reminds others of a single country. It's like saying "i wont eat rice because its too asian." meanwhile rice is a very popular food almost everywhere. same thing with the baseball incident. I think Japan is more baseball crazy than america is.
Re: Olympic Games Too American?
I disagree with the fact that its 'too American' like its already been stated its an international game. Games only ever get into the Olympics on the basis that it is widely played internationally

I just read a few articles that stated that attendance at the matches was low (don't know if that is right..). Maybe part of the reason why it's not going to be included next time? idk. I don't understand why the don't just let the big guns of the sport play, get attendance up. But you know I'd be happy if they replaced it with 20/20 cricket its a pretty international sport :D

Well if that's the case - we might as well call these games too Chinese because they are currently winning the medal tally xD

Well I think you'll be very satisfy. If you go to IOC's website I think there's a list of sports they are considering for Olympics. If memories serves me right Cricket and Rugby are both getting strong considerations.
EDIT: Nvm, save you the trouble gwenibe here's the link : INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE - SPORTS
