Thread: Polygamy

Move to debate and discuss, since this WILL get heated.

In most countries around the world, Polygamy is illegal, regardless of religious beliefs. Doesn't really matter what we think.

Well, I believe that there is no reason to have 4 wifes. You should love one person with all your heart and spend the rest of your life with that one person... only that one person because.

but... it depends on the situation.

My opinion is as follows: Since I'm mormon, polygamy was brought about to take care of Widows and Orphans after the persecutions and the trek to Utah killed of most of the men in the early days of the church. It was then abolished when there was no more need for it. Also, only men who had the means to support more then one wife and their family were allowed to do so.

Since its abolished, its One man, One Wife. What other people do, thats their business and not mine, and I don't mettle with things that aren't my business.

Personally I am against Polygamy since I have watched it NOT work. Scientifically the majority of people is incapable of carrying on more then one relationship at that personal level at a time. As a result there will always be a person in the marriage that is devalued. No one deserves that. Marriage is sacred and should be treated as such by all parties. Now I do understand that there are circumstances that abridge that, where there is real need, but those are and should be an exception. In fact since you mentioned your religion in my religion it is only appropriate when God himself has approved it. That is how serious we consider marriage to be.

I would never do it. I have seen my friends who grew up in a polygamist family have their lives destroyed by it.

I believe that is called Fornication not Polygamy.

Rarely. Very, very, rarely.

Isn't that the reason that Mohammad actually advised against it? That is what the records I read said anyway. Paraphrase: "Don't do it, but if you must no more then four."

I think its wrong you should be marryed to only 1 person showing your love for them polygamy is just a way to have sex .

Yep Yep Yep. That's what i think too but some people don't mind so i also think that if that's what they want then whatever.

It's their decision. It's not up to us to pass judgement on anyone. Do we (I) think it's right? no but it's really not any of our business as long as we aren't involved in it.
