If you had bothered to look at the link to the MSNBC web article, you would have found that the posibility of impact IS ZERO, and since its missing by a greater distance then the space between the earth and the moon, the possibility of electromagnetic disturbance is just as great...

Re: Possible Asteroid Impact: 1/29/2008

its not going to be like in the old movie "maximum overdrive" or whatever when all the machines revolt over an EMP from an asteroid...

and besides, like i said, going in a bunker will do you no good.even if it where to hit, and there was magically no "nuclear winter" afterward, they would still die. the strongest nuke bunkers arent going to save them from a 500 meter asteroid anyway. this is obviously just a coincidence.

Re: Possible Asteroid Impact: 1/29/2008

Yeah thee are people out there who read way to deep into the small things that don't matter. I think all of us on this thread have just stumbled across one of them. I know what its like to be paraniod and all but this is just ridiculous even to me. I say let those who are cray bother themselves and not the rest of us in the world. Also in the next few of days since I won't be dead, I plan to come back to this froum and just type the word, OWN! in huge font and really long. I can already feel the infraction coming.

The asteroid in question is now close enough to radar image from earth, so there's really no question now on what direction it is heading, and how close it will be when it arrives...

I am actually more worried about the satellite that NASA or some company lost control of. They said they are certain that it's coming down to Earth, but no one's sure about the landing spot. Who's feeling lucky?

There was also hydrazine tanks on the Space Shuttle, but they didn't cause any problems with the Columbia breakup on re-entry. I wouldn't worry about it...

Re: Possible Asteroid Impact: 1/29/2008

about that satellite...
it's happened before with different satellites and they've always dropped them in a desert or the middle of the pacific (yes, they have ways of controlling where it lands) the reason you've never heard about the others is because there isn't always someone saying that it's the end of the world just because a space rock passes a little close... if you're reading this by 3:30 tomorrow afternoon guess what we're still fine.
I'm done here... it's so pointless *throws hands up and walks away (for good)*

Yes, and the one with this one is, they DON'T have control on it.

In the fifty year history of Space Flight, there hasn't been a single documented case of someone being injured or killed by falling space orbital debris... And even if the worse case scenario should occur, the US Government is known to have deep pockets, and would pay large sums of money to your benefactors to keep them happy... (You do have your last will and testament up to date?)

Re: Possible Asteroid Impact: 1/29/2008

the day after the end of the world.... cold, but otherwise a nice day. no falling space debris, no mass extinction....

and i would wager that most of the things we make lack the mass and such to make it through the atmosphere and be damaging at all.
