    Re: Reflecting Ourselves

All sorts of people make media, usually as a form of entertainment Arrianna.Although it has its benefits,it also has its disadvantages.Sometimes the media does not really talk about the morals but rather use it to amuse people to boost their ratings particualy for companies who aren't making much profit. Those people are ignoring the morals and instead use the media for their own gains.

well depends if you think that hollywood is reflecting on us but they are mostly worried about themselves and some rappers care about environment like dmx, he wrote a journal about himself going to country to country and its like a wild journey for him to come here and explore from the outside of the reflection that hollywood has

    Re: Reflecting Ourselves

Fiction does NOT a reflection of the society that wrote it. It is a reflection of the AUTHOR who wrote it, and his commentary on that society is what we see in it. Society has nothing to do with the creation of great works. It is the individual that is always the innovator, the artist, or the genius. A society simply serves as the subject matter. For example, "Moby Dick" is often seen as the "great American novel", but it was not the result of society. Rather, it was Mellville commenting on American culture.

Modern forms of communication have not changed this. "Star Trek" is a clear example of that. The producers and script writers wrote each episode of the series to reflect more on the social beliefs of the fans of the original series. Later, darker themes that didn't involve the captain somehow managing to fight giant lizards bare-chested were incorporated (they started to cover the subjects of drugs, homosexuality, the horrors of abusing newly developed, untested technology, etc).

While pop culture does influence the members of society, that is simply a result of feedback. The author/script writer's product is based on their interpretation of society, and therefore, it is the author's INTERPRETATION of society that pop-culture adopts, and therefore, the society adopts. The book or tv series is simply the medium by which the author/script writer's philosophy is broadcast.

On the contrary it is both because we are, in our own ways, products of our society. Shakespeare could place Julius Caesar or the Merchant of Venice in Italy and make the play supposedly about what happened then and their society but in reality it is still about his perception and a reflection of Elizabethan society instead.

Yes, what is written and made does reflect the author and once you know what to look for it speaks volumes. Several of my favorite authors at one time are no longer even on my reading list because of this. It does not remove the reflection of society that occurs as well. The reason? Society is made of people and people write based on what they know.
