My thoughts are that smacking a child I would not do, but spanking them is well to better than smacking them half to death. depends what kind of person you are.
I just heard on the news that people were thinking about banning smacking children. So is my question: Do parent have a right to smack there children? Should it go as far to ban it?
How they plan to do it I'm not sure.
I wouldn't want to go as far as smacking my child, well I hope not anyways, I don't see how inflicting pain helps, but then again it is effective in getting the message across, especially for a child who won't take no as an answer. I'm still divided on this debate.
What are your thoughts?
Edit: here's an article about it:

TO CLEAR THINGS UP ^_^
Smacking ( or spanking?) could be said has hitting a child as punishment for whatever reason.

Your life means nothing to me.
Child abuse is one thing. Banning smacking your child is... not the answer. Obviously beating your child is wrong. But the people that do this, are breaking the law anyways. So by banning smacking your child it's not going to stop those people from what they are already doing. It will only help add problems to raising children.
True it can make children grow up an be mean to other kids I seen it before.

This is why i'm divided on the issue
You hit the kid - they grow up thinking hitting is ok or be mean to other kids like mentioned
But if you don't discipline the kid then you got one spoilt brat thinking they can chuck a tantrum and get whatever they want in life or they are little devils at school, cause parent didn't discipline them
ok so maybe not all kids turn out like that. But it's a possibility. Plus how can you define between a parent that abuses children, to simple disciplining them. Some times it obvious, but smacking is kinda is abuse when you think about it..
Yeah, in some sense it is. But discipline is required. I don't think that grounding someone is always going to help. Let's face it. There are some people, and children, that don't listen to normal reasoning. It's messed up to say this, but sometimes it's the only thing they will listen to.
It will never work. Can you imagine trying to inforce this. A nightmare. Im not really against smacking a child if HE/She isnt too young and if not done too hard. Shouldnt be done to harm them.
Oh it will get the message across if you smack them everytime.
From reading the article, I'm pretty sure they mean the act of 'spanking' when they say 'smacking' (there's quite a bit of words you can use for this action). It's an interesting idea... I don't believe it's illegal in the US, but I've been told spanking has been banned in some countries.
As for me, I'm not really against spankings... I mean, alot of parents who do use the method, do it for discipline. There is the possibility it might effect the child/ren in a negative way, but it seems like you could say the same thing for a child living in lapse of luxury, in a huge mansion and have a maid, nanny, and butler to do their anything and everything for them; or a child living only with his heavy drinker father in a neighborhood filled with gang activity and drugs.
