I think it depends on how intense the 'smacking' is. But if it is used at the right time and for the right reasons then yes I think it is useful. I was spanked as a child and it made me learn a lot faster about what is right and wrong, instead of repeating the same mistakes over and over

No parent has the right to BEAT their children, but they have every right to DISCIPLINE them. I, for example, am not scarred for life because I was punished when I misbehaved, but I know plenty of children who are spoiled rotten because their parents let them get away with everything. I fall back on the old adage: "Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child."

I don't think its right to go as far as smacking them, but let me tell ya some are selfish, touble making kids lol I use to be like that, but smacking them won't help, try yelling it works better (till they get enough) thats what my parents did to me when I was like that.

Yeah. At times it is reasonable to give a spanking for bad behavior in my opinion. Not in the face though. And I especially do not think it is reasonable for the legal guardian to smack a child out of anger or any adult, or human being for that matter.

If a child is hit they learn to hit back... watching Supernanny on tv I learned "time out" and lecturing to a child is more effective and giving them productive attention is better than smacking or spanking. When a child is treated with respect they learn the meaning of respect. They learn that life is not a game and to not hit mommy or daddy. When a child acts up he or she is just craving attention and love... they don't always have the means of getting their parents attention so discipline in terms of teaching to do chores and homework and being rewarded with food, hugs and toys is far more effective than old fashioned smack or spanking which the child might misunderstand as thinking it is ok to hit thinking its a game. Time out and lecturing is more humane and effective. A child should know what he or she did wrong and why it is wrong and be taught to do things correctly. Children do respond to love and productive attention. Children who get hit just hit back thinking it is a game.

Re: The right to smack a child?

Depends on your definition of smacking.

I believe in spanking children, and similair forms of punishment, and I have good reason to. First of all, quite simply I was a hellchild, then my parents began spanking me, a year later I was a different person, and reflecting back on my childhood I'm glad my parents smacked me around, hell I deserved it and if I were in their shoes I'd have done the same.

Secondly, I've noticed in my area about 12 years ago a rise in mothers deciding to not spank their children and to find other forms of punishment. About 4-5 years after that and since then I've noticed a rise in whiny, rude, spoiled, and otherwise misfit children who I think should be shipped off to military school.

I will use spanking and other similiar methods in shaping my child (and by shaping I mean the psychological term) I would never slap a child across the face or otherwise hurt a child (attacks on the facial area can have psychological effects on children and even adolescents) however.

Of course spanking would be a sort of last resort measure, saved for when my child (most likely boy) ****s up big time, I'll be seeing to it he realizes he's ****ed up big time so that there is a smaller chance he will be ****ing up again.
