Re: The Root of All Evil

I'd say injustice is the root of all evil. Injustice of the government has lead to countless revolutions in every country's history. Even when the people rebel, it only creates a vicious circle of violence and establishes a government that will eventually be just as bad as the government the revolution took down. The germans started WWII because of the injustice of the Allies in the Treaty of Verasilles in WWI. People hold strike's because of a companies poor treatment of their workers. And if left unchecked, injustice can kill millions of lives.

Re: The Root of All Evil

Perspective is the root of all evil. Am I using that word right?

What some people consider evil, others don't. Say, for example, homosexuality. In one's perspective, it could be evil. In another's, it's not. And this "evil" comes from how one sees things.

I still think "evil" is only an adjective, which was later turned into a noun, to differentiate it from... pretty much everything in one's community / society / view, etc... But one can't ignore the fact that a view / definition? of "evil" is one held by most, if not all societies and civilizations... Evil is a very big and important adjective, obviously. Sometimes even whole nations are unanimous as to what "evil" acts are and who are "evil" people... Torture, Adolf Hitler, etc...

That is the BEST answer given in this thread! I love you!
The root of all evil? There is no straight answer. Humans have quite a number of flaws that will lead to deceptation and betrayl. We LOVE money. We are biased to the unknown. We are hateful to others we don't understand. ETC.
The root of all evil? There really is none

Re: The Root of All Evil

_______ is the root of all evil.

The fact that it's a blank, something that can be anything, and I have the freedom to choose... to think... to ponder... to create something in that blank... IS the root of all evil.

The ability to think for myself is the root of all evil.
-If I had not thought of it, it would have never happened.
-If I had not thought of it, it wouldn't have spread.
-If I had not thought of it, it would not have been learned.
-etc

With every choice, there's a consequence... with every action, there's a reaction...

But if it were just that... just a reaction... and no thought came with it, then it would not be considered evil.
If no one can claim it is evil, or even THINK it is evil... then the idea of "evil" (which is a perception, not an absolute to the senses) would not exist.
And therefore, not be evil.

...as a villain or supercomputer would agree with me: Good and evil is created/perceived by humanity. Get rid of what makes a "human", and the problem is solved.

The 7 deadly sins are the root of all evil........DUH! lol Without them, there would be no room for bad things, everything would be good, peaceful.

Sounds absurd? Think about it. As we grow all the things our parents are supposed to teach us are "good". Share your things with others, say please and thank you, it doesn't matter if you didn't mean it to happen you should have thought about it first (the number of times I have said that one....). The mental attitude of actions with no consequences or an egocentric belief that the world revolves around you is one shared with my 5 year old. Yet there are people who seem to have never learned better or are just in denial. I submit to you that they simply never grew up or have chosen not to mature.

So, immaturity is the root of all evil.
I am surprised no one else has seen this and agreed. I can give an example for many "roots of evil" mentioned on this thread.

For example, Greed: "Mommy, this is mine, and this is mine, and THIS is mine too!"

I could connect nearly any evil anyone on this thread would think of to immaturity. There have been very few sane people with at least a half-decent upbringing that have gone on to commit many crimes and evil actions.

I'm not so sure that even without being taught morals, our perception of what is right or wrong would stay ignorant.

Nature to me, is very delicate, supernatural, and objective. Nature works in a certain way, and we are inclined to live by its rules. So, to disagree with Chief, it is not merely human nature that is evil, but moreso our perversion of (sin) of nature. I tend to have an Aristotle view of life, in that, "goodness" or "what is right" isn't necessarily something that exists apart from us, but rather lives within us. Nature works in its own way, apart from any human action at all, and we are at our best and at our happiest when we work in accordance with nature. If being "good" was relative, then it's like saying there's really no "good" at all. That's why I think there is an objective, natural way of order that we live by. Sort of like a Natural Law, which our civil laws (Don't murder, steal, etc... etc...) is based upon.

And though goodness, as prescribed by nature, is something that is within us, we have our free will of which we're able to choose what we want. So even though we have the knowledge or reason to know whether something is right or wrong, our will may not be strong enough to choose against that which might be wrong, because of the pleasure we receive from it. Whether it be bodily pleasures, emotional, or mental pleasures.

Like I explained above, the evil isn't necessarily within us, but moreso when we stray from doing good. When our actions are perverted by our will.

And I'd really have to disagree on love being a root of evil. Love is in direct opposition of what "evil" stands for. People will always do what they "think" is right for those who they love. That doesn't necessarily make them evil, regardless of their decisions.

Love of objects or things (like money) is a different story though.

Re: The Root of All Evil

The media is the root of all evil. Figuring that a lot of people listen to the media that only share half the story, but the people are to lazy to find the other half of the story.

quite simple actually ...
Human being is the root of all evil ... in whatever form it takes it's always the same source and to the same source .. it just runs all round the cycle called "humanity" ,it's just a part of who we are ...
