there have been so many school shootings in the last decade and a half and i was wondering if you think some were preventable. i think SOME we might have been able to prevent by conseling the troubled students and finding out what would motivate them to slaughter fellow classmates brutally. However, i think now it's getting harder and harder to find the real troubled kids. with to emo fad on the rise isnt it harder to find kids that may REALLY have mental illness(bipolar, schizophrenia, and other harmful diseses that may spout violent actions) and abusive situations at home that might contribute to their behaviour?
I think that everyone would like to believe we could help all the kids who are having problems in school academically and emotionally, anything that would drive them to turn on their fellow students. The truth is many of the kids that have decided to become violent toward their peers are often hard to identify and they are too afraid to talk to anyone.
As long as gun can be bought by anyone there will be school shootings anywhere in the country. Also, schools should take seriously any signs that students show such as depression and suicidal thoughts.
I agree and from what we kknow of the VT shootings the guy had been writting poems that had been very dark and depressive almost no one said anything or tried to help. It also the fact that some people dont even care and then when somthing big happens tehy wish that they could have done somthing that might have changed the outcome. To me even if one person could just hold their hand out to somene in need then there would be less violence over all. Its jsut peopel in general are to busy in their own llives to care.
Yes, Bring about very strict gun control legislation and repeal concealed carry laws, and not only will you see a drop in school shootings, but a drop in gun related crimes/deaths period.
Guns should only be in the hands of Police, Military and Security services.
And don't start preaching the right to bear arms to me, the US constitution states that the right to bear arms is only for the formation of a well organized militia to defend the country when it is needed. and since The US claims that it has the most powerful military in the world, a Civilian militia isn't really needed is it?

Not only is the second amendment found among the Bill of Right, a document that outlines citizenry rights and not those of the government or military, it contains the phrase "the people" which is only found in the Constitution when addressing personal rights. Add to that the fact that the man who wrote it originally lumped it in with the Freedom of Religion and Free Speech, spoke out in his lifetime about the greatness of the US because we trust our citizens to be armed (unlike other countries), and that the Supreme Court consistently finds that according to that same Amendment the government cannot prevent US citizens from owning any weapon that can be used in defense of the country and your point is mote. Put simply if you have signed up for the draft when you were 18 you are part of that "well organized militia" even if they never call you up.
Can we ever stop these shootings? Sure, first lets stop prescribing drugs to kids just so the teachers will have an easier time doing their jobs and then let the teachers who qualify carry their guns again. We didn't have any school shootings until we also had a law saying that they couldn't carry guns on campus. Think about it.
Really, because Canada has strict gun control, and our gun related death rate is 5 to every 100,000, while the US is 15 per 100,000. Statistics shows that it works.

I do believe that restricting guns laws will prevent deaths.
Wasn't it one shooting in American where the guy brought the gun, he had no record or anything, then he went and shot up a school? Now if he wasn't able to get that gun in the first place, it could have prevented that loss of life ( Maybe that was the one at VT?)
I agree 100% with aceman there is no need for 'civilians' to have guns. Why on earth any government would allow that I have no idea ( no offence intended ^_^;
Sure, they would still be able to get there hands on a gun if they really tried, but boy, it would be harder and more risky. It might not save every one, but it will save a whole heap of people. I don't see how restricting guns would make it go up, considering it would make it much harder for any one to get a gun.
Also, an example, Australia has heavily restricted the use of guns - gun related deaths haven't gone up. Ignoring societies differences of course
How about creating a law that would prevent a person getting a gun in the first place? No need to worry about defending yourself with more guns on a campus. Last I checked it was a place for learning. Protecting yourself from guns with more guns, just sounds like a paranoid world much?
Isn't prevention much better than a last resort defence? Think of how many lives could be saved simply because thousands of people couldn't get their hands on a gun? And there would be heaps. The desperate ones would find them of course, but at least not all of them could. More lives saved.
