Should this be discussed in class?

My English teacher asked us to fill out this quiz so she could ask us about it. What do you think about the value of these questions and if they are apropreate.

    1. In America, there is pressure for woman to be pretty more than smart.

    2. Unrealistic "beauty" standards are forced on women from an early age.

    3. Pornography is harmful and/or degrading to women.

    4. Toys such as Barbie Dolls promote unrealistic body images that are often harmful to girls.

    5. Media and advertisements promote unrealistic portrayals of woman that are harmful.

    6. A man can look at pornography without viewing women in "real life" as sexual objects or inferior beings.

Any thoughts would be nice. I remind you that this was in English, not health.

I do not think for English Class this is that appropriate to be talking about. Though your teacher brought up some good questions she shouldn't be asking you guys about them in English now if she wanted to transfer to Health I can see asking these questions. Though my English teacher taught us History the whole time so maybe our teachers are allowed to go beyond what they are supposed to teach.

I don’t see how this relates to “English” class unless the teacher is going to have you write on the subject matter.

I will say that the questions are quite sexist…no where, does it ask how those or similar things impact men. Each of those questions could be asked independent of sex and thus been how it impacts men or woman. For them all to be towards women is setting a horrible sexist tone, in fact questions 3 & 6 are really offensive given there are a large number of woman who look at porn, it isn’t limited to just men.

It makes it sound like the teacher’s husband has been doing those things or telling her she needs to make improvements and she wants someone to back her side. Either way, I don’t see how this is a discussable subject matter for English class.

My teacher is very sexist. In general, she will offer the female students in the class more help and tends to grade them alot easyer than the rest of the class. There are two girls who she is always helping even though they are reveving A's while others have D's and F's. I just don't think it is right.

Get your parents if not you to talk to the principal, if that doesn't help talk to the board of education for your sector. If legit then that kind of behavior is unacceptable and needs to be addressed.

I think she has an excues for the quiz but I can't prove that she is sexist. I can't tape her and she would just say that the girls were doing better. While that may be true, her focis is not on all her students and is there fore unethical. I will see what I can do about the reporting thing.

I don't think that you are supposed to be talking about that kind of stuff in english but i have to agree somewhat.... nowadays women have been changed for a perfect standard... if women don't live up to those standards they are usually put down until they do everything they can think of to become that type of person... it isn't healthy....

yes all those above should be discussed in class. The education should be preparing the students to a real life and not only to fill the student with information. All of those are latent problems in today's society, the student should be informed and not only informed but ready to face all those.
English is a class not only to learn "how to write" but it is a class that teaches you how to express your thoughts clearly. The topics out in the world are not only about "literature."

About those topics and more we discussed on our english course this semester while we were applying all the formats for writting.... (APA, CM, MLA, CSE, COS documentation) on our research papers.
