She sounds to me to be a middled aged, fat, and very uptight sexually feminist. This stuff need to stay in health class. Im sure the women wish we were all buff and, like to view the hott guys as objects.
3 and 6 I'm not so sure about...but as for the rest...it kinda depends on how it's applying in class. I know in my Eng class(Eng Major) we talk about things that could be very sexist depending upon the nature of the topic.
But there are things in English and culture that affect writing more than just meets the eye. Personally, if applied right, I don't think these topics are wrong for an English class because our society and culture shape the way we write today. Not that I agree with the topics or nor do I believe all of them are true.
~Attempt the Impossible~
The teacher is sexis for sure and I bet she doesn't even touch guys which make her...
As for the questions they're sexist as well. They shouldn't be discussed in class because all of them are wrong. Girls aren't supposed to be forced to look good at an early stage neither the stuff about porn is right.
Well, in my english class in High School, we did discuss these things. We also discussed things like racism - whatever was the unit at the time.
But after reading other posts, yes obviously she is sexist and if she wasn't these would have been great discussion.
I don't think it a matter of wether it's right or wrong. They are more point of discussion to get people talking about how women are portrayed. But I disagree with you. They aren't 'forced' but they certainly are made to feel that they have to look like that model to be accepted in society.
I don't believe barbie is promoting unrealistic body images - but those bratz dolls are and so are the media. And I think to some extent that there is pressure to be pretty over smart - I don't know, never really delt with that personally. As for pornography, I don't know lol, but I think young girls seeing those skinny women on music videos is more damaging than anything else.
coming back to the original question yest, I think that it should be discussed, but in your case, a different class, and prehaps a unbiased teacher, I think boy teenagers have just as much right to say their view as well girls do. It's a great discussion for both sexes.
1. In America, there is pressure for woman to be pretty more than smart.
2. Unrealistic "beauty" standards are forced on women from an early age.
3. Pornography is harmful and/or degrading to women.
4. Toys such as Barbie Dolls promote unrealistic body images that are often harmful to girls.
5. Media and advertisements promote unrealistic portrayals of woman that are harmful.
6. A man can look at pornography without viewing women in "real life" as sexual objects or inferior beings.
I think women are forced so-to-speak on a level you don't even see nowdays.
With all the TV adds, magazines, health foods, diet pills and w/e else is out there it's only natural that a woman or young girl would run into these questions or some kind of situation where they might think they need to be the skinny beautiful girl on the TV to acomplish something. It seems to me that these questions are a bit wierd for school to me, maybe for english class. What grade are you in?
Question#1: I would have to say that over the last 10 years I believe it's finally changed from wanting women to be all pretty to accepting women for being smart if they are. With that said I just think people are a bit more accepting of smart women nodays than let's say 10-15 years ago.
Question#2:I agree, as I said earlier it's the TV, magazines and other people who do it. But it's the parents who have to realize and teach their daughters about these things at an early age to keep the barbie doll affect from happening.
Question#3: I'd agree to a certain point that porn is degrading to women. I'm not a bit porn fan but if I think about it I suppose it's all in the mind of the reader after all.
Question#4: Once again I'm 50/50 on the barbie doll thing. Yes it could happen but with good parents as rold models and plenty of common sense growing up it shouldn't.
Question#5: Media..Yes they do, and it's to get the future skinny TV models ready so they can go pluck them up with no problems. It's inevitable that some girls are going to see these skinny TV stars and be starstruck. They are going to take the diet pills and exercise until they are skin and bones and learn lines to be on TV. As long as we have a "HOLLYWOOD" it's going to happen. Slowly but surely bigger women are getting into media roles and over the next 10 years I'm sure we'll see more changes like that. A good actress is a good actress, looks are only a benifit.
Question#6: Men look at porn for lots or reasons I suppose. I'm not a big porn fan but have checked out a playboy or 2 in my day. I don't think it affected the way I see women at all personally. I cannot vouch for any other man though. I'm sure there are some men who are stupid and still live in the stone age where you just needed a club to get your wife who read that stuff and think like that but that's life. There are some out there who are thinking about killing lots of people so of course there will be those who think " dirty slut" when they see a playboy, but there are a lot of stupid people in the world after all.
