Re: Should this be discussed in class?

Question#5: Media..Yes they do, and it's to get the future skinny TV models ready so they can go pluck them up with no problems. It's inevitable that some girls are going to see these skinny TV stars and be starstruck. They are going to take the diet pills and exercise until they are skin and bones and learn lines to be on TV. As long as we have a "HOLLYWOOD" it's going to happen. Slowly but surely bigger women are getting into media roles and over the next 10 years I'm sure we'll see more changes like that. A good actress is a good actress, looks are only a benifit.
Yeah, but not all girls have a weight problem. Some are naturally skinny, and don't have to do anything to be like the models on TV and Magazines. Also not every girls takes it to the extreme to be like the Hollywood ppl, and not all the Hollywood stars are too skinny. Some look quite good and healthy. Its the Paris runway models and the Lindsey Lohans that give these bag images. Yeah i hope we see the Lindsey Lohans disappearing in the future, but i hope we dont see em replaced by Rosanne Barr types. *Shivers* Hollywood need stars that are healthy and not anorexic. They also don't need Fat ppl either, as that image is just as bad(unhealthy) for young girls.

    2. Unrealistic "beauty" standards are forced on women from an early age.

    3. Pornography is harmful and/or degrading to women.

    4. Toys such as Barbie Dolls promote unrealistic body images that are often harmful to girls.

    5. Media and advertisements promote unrealistic portrayals of woman that are harmful.

    6. A man can look at pornography without viewing women in "real life" as sexual objects or inferior beings.

Any thoughts would be nice. I remind you that this was in English, not health.
This is not educatianol matirial, your teacher is just forcing her opinion on you!
Wich acording to law is iligal teachers maynot force there opinions on to there students, and if i where you i would go to your mentor (or however is in carge of this) and complane about this.

I don't think that those questions would have necessarily been appropriate for certain classrooms but it all depends on the academic level and matureness of the class. They do bring up some very interesting controversial issues despite their appropriateness. Many of those topics play a big part in self esteem and values today.

I look at Gwenibe's post and I don't really hear much about this from you Mattness. The questions alone arn't really enough to mean anything more than a topic/subject that has been discussed in classes for a bit of time now.

What unit are you currently covering in your class? Oppression in general?
Now if these questions came straight out of the blue, eh I suppose it could mean she is sexist. Still we don't know what your topic is in class or what the whole point of answering these questions really are.

Based on the questions alone, an opinion created by that is pretty inappropriate. I have covered this matter plenty of times in English, Social studies, science, health, and debate. This isn't some sheet of unique or odd questions in general.

She may be a little frilly and sensative type, so who knows if you are just comming to the conclusion of her being sexist solely because you don't like her personality. I could easily consider you yourself being the sexist or out to get your teacher by the lack of info you put into these posts.

Girls in class tend to do better than boys. I don't know what your grading scale is like, but if the males are at the lower part recieving the D's and F's, it shouldn't be hard to figure out why she focuses on the females. Girls also ask for help more, while the guys don't give a damn or they are far too stubborn to raise their hand. Guys could also be fooling around most of the time like we usually do, so that could also be it.

This situation happens in all if not most schools. The ones who pay attention show respect, get good grades, show exceptional behavior will always get the most attention. If you recieved F's and D's, it probably isn't because she is trying to sabotage you, but rather because you deserve that grade. Why help you if you won't help yourselves? It isn't a teachers job to waste their time on students who don't cooperate when there are others more deserving.

Her excuse for the quiz would be appreciated, what course you are covering currently, what you have covered recently, and what expectations you have for the future. These are very important questions that should be taken into account if you would like a 2nd opinon.

Until you give out that info, I don't see why it is even right to make a response. You are dealing with an actual person here, and you can take our posts a little too seriously. I don't know about the rest but I don't like to deal with that kind of childish behavior.

Re: Should this be discussed in class?

its tru that women are seen nowadays as more objects or some pretty thing than a person, but, i really dont mean to offend any women here by this, but alot of girls I KNOW have little self respect and let people see them more as an object than a human. women like that really have nobody but themselves to blame for that, but as for things like porn im a bloke and even i reckon its degrading. really, its letting people see women as sex objects, whereas if that sort of crap didnt exist, people wouldent really have much of a chioce, and if i woman decided to walk around with super short skirts and thast sort of thing and act slutty or whatever, they have nobody but themselves to blame, and they arent being used but to the extent to what they allow themselves. but as for being pressured to look pretty rather than be smart is a problem, but it ultimately becomes the girl/woman's own desicion to choose her looks over her intelligence, once again, im sorry if i offended anybody, i dont mean to. ultimately, i think its really sad how women are seen more as objects still, even after years of people trying to stop that, and that women let themselves be treated disrespectfully. but yes, i know that its not always their fault, but they can make up thier own mind.
Blackness covers all I see and all I touch. No feeling of pain, just sorrow. My hand loses grip of the sword I held. And I turn to become a true shadow.

Wake up Miroku. Those are called examples. See, it is rash thinking such as this which can ruin a person's life. Don't try pullin that crap and not respond to the rest of my post. You could be doing exactly what I suspect Mattness is doing by picking out solitary things instead of seeing the whole picture.

Those sterotypes are there for a reason, and since I am a guy who has seen it plenty of times, I can personally say it is out there. Did you notice I left out the negatives for women? How about we pay attention a little and think outside the box. I mean there isn't even a real hidden message in my words.

True, but I never said that they all had a weight problem, I just said that's what Hollywood goes for.
