    should we ban MSN?

recently a university has made an census, asking parents if microsoft should ban msn, and most of theme said yes. WHY? msn is making peoples grades falling. for example grammar: You-----u.
    that---- dat
    lol-----laugh out loud
    brb----be right back
kids are so use to it, when they are writing reports, they would consdenly using the short forms. and grade falling is because they are on the msn TOO LONG. so in your opinion should Microsoft ban MSN.

Hey it isn't just msn btw there's aol, yahoo, w.m., etc and also not all people do that. It can happen to some, but this might be only way for people to talk with each other when they need to or whatever. So to answer your question it shouldn't be ban they just need a time limit or whatever. ^_^

That is probably the most idiotic proposition I've ever heard. If you're going to try and ban an online communication system like MSN, you might as well ban MySpace, Yahoo, AIM, AOL, and just about everything else including forums. It's all the same thing in different context and people use alternative ways of spelling in every single one of them, weither intentionally or no (in the case of bad spelling skills). You can't hold the a program responsible for corrupting a person's habit of writing, it's like blaming a gun when someone kills someone else. Sure, the gun was used (in this case MSN) but truely it's the users fault. I think instead of trying to shut down MSN they should pull their heads out of their asses and try to encourage people to learn how to type, becuase really if you're a fast typer then you won't have any reason to use 1337 speak. Problem fixed.

right now msn is bigger than yahoo massager, and all other online talking. msn is most used by people gr 3-12, where they can see each other everyday, if they are always talking in school, why do they still need to talk at home, when you can study(but i really want to say is to play video games )

my point is to show every one, why we should talk on msn or other online communication for 24 hours, and if they really wanna talk to each other use the telephone, and if they ban all online communication, will they get the kids grade higher. and make there eyes better too :P and yes i know it is stuiped to blam the gun when someone get their head blown up, but if you think about it, if the world doesn't have guns, there won't be world war 1/2.

    Re: should we ban MSN?

You can't blame MSN and chat programs for poor spelling and grades.....I use chat programs, and internet grammar, but when I write papers, I obviously don't use slang. If someone can't figure out when it's appropriate and not appropriate to use slang, then chances are it's not the chat program that's the problem, but something with the kid or their education.

The more likely reason as to why it causes poor grades, is that kids spend more time on the chat program and computer, rather than studying....so when a test comes by, they're not prepared. And that's not MSN's problem, that's a parents problem. They have to determine how long they should let their kids on the computer, before it starts having ill effect.

If someone is a poor speller though, I can see how it could cause the problem, because depending on how a word is spelled, that person might think it's correct. Like, they might mistake "though" and "tho," but when I was in elementary and middle school, I knew several people who would make that mistake, without having a computer.

    Re: should we ban MSN?

i don't think banning msn would do anything, just like every1 else has said internet communication are just far 2 intergrated into the web (web being pretty much communication anyway) so if u goin to ban msn u might as well shut the web down but even then we still got our cell phones and can just simply text away.

and i think these parent are just looking for something else to blame, like violent video games, tv and even music. so ppl blaming msn cause of falling grades isn't anything new really. but u just can't blame msn for falling grades, i mean for me msn has made my grades go up, cause it allow me to share my reports with friend and vise versa (cheating i know but its been working so far), and if anything its made me more smarter like.

then u come to spelling, and msn language in reports well i've seen it happen when somebody stayed up till 5:00am finishing off the report. but can we blame msn for poor spelling, i don't think we can, cause lets face it, when was the last time really a kid picked up a book? we don't see it happen that much lately now do we. cause there is always tv and thats definately alot more fun isn't it?. and do parent encourage kids to read books anymore (i know mine didn't)?

so it looks like msn is just the 'new' thing to blame, i wish parent would just stop blaming things and use all that energy to fix the problem not just cry about it..

    Re: should we ban MSN?

MSN is one of the best ways that we can communicate to our friends and really it is easier and less time consuming if we wrote to each other in short grammer that is efficient in terms of communication. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with that. The poll is just pointless. You can't really stop MSN just because you believe that children are failing in school due to using slang to communicate in instant messaging program. Also i notice that the poll is asking parents and not children.Children should have a say in this because it makes the census more just.

    Re: should we ban MSN?

It would be stupid to ban MSN, just because it's "lowering grades".
It's up to the person to improve their own grades.
And if a person can't distinguish between msn/internet slang when it comes to spelling, shouldn't the blame go on those who are teaching that child? whether it be the parents or even the teachers?
