A simple yet complex question....

Ok i was asked this ealier today, and it both interested and confused me and i couldnt find an answer and i dont know weather its been done before or not but i looked for it and couldnt find it so here we go! (its actually rather debatable)

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody was around to here it does it still make a sound?

something to think about eh?

yes but you forget that you are around to hear yourself talk to yourself there is absolutely nothing around this tree but other trees and trees cant hear things unless they are super trees or something

um...this is actually a rhetorical question...you know that, right? if you say yes, you have no proof, if you say no, you have no proof you that you didn't hear anything because you weren't there...

Not really the aswer is always yes.Because there is always someone out to heard the tree fall.A bird, a worm, or woodpecker.

yeah but if like a sound is just vibrations in the air right? and a human ear is used to turn those vibrations into sound if theres no hume/animal ears around then the vibrations cannot become a sound so i think no theres no sound made but there is still loads more theories and questions.

Both yes and no.
Yes because there still is air and since sound travels through air, the tree must've made some sound when it fell.

No because there is no one to hear it so you don't know ...

And the rest is matter of opinion.

I agree that the answer is yes, Sound is the vibration of matter, capable of being perceived by the sense of hearing. This does not mean it needs to be heard but rather could be heard. Even if the tree does not make an "audible" sound detectable by human ear does not mean it did not make a sound as long as matter was vibrated (hence the tree falling would produce this) and that "sound" is capable of being heard by something that can hear in that frequency.
