Re: Are we addicted to technology?

I've actually been put into this kinda situation twice now actually. I'm still alive, so I guess that's gotta account for something.

The first time was when my mobile finally screwed up enough to piss me off. It'd been playing up since day 1, but when the speakers started dieing, despite being less than 6 months old, it had to get repaired pronto. I actually decided to go without a mobile while it was being fixed, which was OK. The biggest problems were I kept instinctually checking to see if it was still there, only to find it wasn't (duu), while the other was I forgot anything else to write notes on about the wood I needed for new shelves.

The 2nd time I faced no technology was when my precious baby , MY computer, had a problem with a virus scan. I ran a scan & it picked up a Trojan Horse Virus, recommending me to quarantine it. I did so, but it turns out it was a Windows startup file, so when I next tried to jump on the net, Windows tried to start, loaded up, got to the black screen just before bringing up the accounts, & just froze on that. Nothing I did could get me past. That was Monday. It was Saturday before I managed to get it up & running again, but not before I reinstalled Windows. I'm still having a few problems, but at least my baby's up & limping. It might take a little while before it's ready for online gaming, but I'll survive till then. Honestly, I'll survive...

now just think about that. No power, no back up generators, and no

We'd all revert to savagery, because we wouldnt know how to survive otherwise. Looting, killing, looting some more.
    Not really,

When the black out happen in New York, I recall they said everyone just sat around didn't do much but wait.

As for Alaska. I think we are not addicted as the rest of the world. I mean I drink well water. Iron good for women. [Little Fact]

Humans are always going to have savagery, as long as sex lives on. Its the main thing that makes us still animals, and well since men like it;; I think there ok with the savagery. [off topic]

When we had a black out here the first thing everyone did where: 1.) Try there Phones, 2.) Find a flashlight, 3.) Go outside

Where I live everyone came outside and look up. Since its Summer and its always light out. I remember the kids ran to the parks to play while the grown ups tried to figure out whats up. Can't say that for other places thou.

The only thing that says when tech goes out is when those jail cells open and the treatment places doors unlock. Then we in trouble. Then we will see some savagery.

The only tech I need is to know what time it is. If I don't know what time it is. I freak. It scared me, or not knowing what day it is scares me.

I am not close to my family in the lower 48, but they know as well as I know if the tech is gone worry about yourself!

Thats the first thing in any emergency

And since people are so very lazy, [most] will just sit till the lights come back on and if they don't. We get those cells out and call are families around the world no less.

I think we underestimate ourself everyday.

Of course the saying is: Never Underestimate the Power of Mans Stupidity.

Which one? Are you talking about A black out, or THE black out?

I'm talking about that in less than 2 hours, people looted every store they could possibly loot.

And by the end of the day, everyone had a new pair of tennis shoes.

And that's what made blackouts famous for the "looting". ( was it in the 70s? )
    That was just awesome.

    ...
    ...flashlights?? O_o What are flashlights?

    XD JK! JK!

o_o It really depends where you are and where you're from.
Around here, everyone will ignorantly try to call someone... >_>
I always want to yell at my family "IF IT'S A BLACKOUT, THAT MEANS THEY CAN'T USE THE PHONE EITHER!!!" >__<

    ah well...

But seriously, if you're in a BIG-METRO CITY CITY of which progress is key... then you're going to see a lot of chaos if the blackout is permanent.

And seeing that the population of such a city can outnumber every surrounding city: Be ready to see a lot of crazy people huddled in one giant cement box, burst out.

... I think a true test if you're ready for a permanent blackout is to be out in the forest for more than just a "trip"... you'd have to be lost, and your food wasn't "prepared" for this situation. XD Don't ask me how you got there, let's just say you fell off some cliff.

Though we consider that a form of "survival", it's what we would've been in, in the past.

...but we're not as ballsy as we used to be...

...you don't see anyone forming huge motorcycle gangs of chaos with chains anymore...
<_< *sigh* We're all a bunch of p*ssies nowadays. Even the Bloods don't come out as often as they used to.

In this day and age you can't even expect a GOOD riot.

Re: Are we addicted to technology?

What is technology? Where do we draw the line? Hell, that's where I'm gonna begin. Technology ain't just your fancy little little cell phones of the modern age. Though I must say, I'm sure many would die of lack of socialism if it were the only thing taken.

If I were really stubborn right now, I'd complain the knife and spoon are technology, but since our minds have already learnt of this tech, it'd be hard for our kind to lose this even for the generations to come.

Anyways, this whole topic is biased to people who are technologically fluent like since I'm pretty sure most of you are using some modern day technology to communicate with the internet here...unless your an alien with awesome powers. Since this is biased, we forget a large part of the world who survive, not to our liking, but survive. So it's not like the entire human race will go into panic...Though since our large inflation of humans on the planet, most a lot of people who are crammed together in these mega cities with little ressourses around will probably turn into 'survival mode'.

Re: Are we addicted to technology?

It's kinda hard to lose a knife and spoon though...

And can easily be replaced by a sharp and dull object that we decided to clean...

So we're talking about technology that makes it easy for us humans to do everyday things.
Sure, weapons and tools make it easy for us... but it's not impossible to make, for even the most-sheltered.

    So, that's not a problem.

I think a better point could be made by pointing out the simpler technologies... such as a producer of technology or product of technology... (producer types: Fridge, flashlight, etc... product types: water bottle, foam material, etc)

But yes, I think we'd all agree here that the big cities would turn into a "survival state"...

That's right peaceful towns and lands, get ready to be trampled by the idiotic waves coming from our places! XD

I've been in an semi-Amish (semi, meaning they allowed some technology into their lives) house before... I actually didn't know it was semi-Amish til I left a week after...

It was actually nice. A board of monopoly, hanging laundry in the wind, eating apples while sitting under a tree, taking care of the farm animals ( I didn't do much of that other than poking at the chickens XD )... it was simple and fun... and it took forever to find the chess board. O_o

I could stand that, but I won't be a liar and claim that I'd rather live without technology. Sure, it complicates things more, it causes more drama and problems, it weakens the physical state of humans, buuuut... can you really admit that it's not fun to have?

Re: Are we addicted to technology?

We as a human race are addicted to so many things... Even technology some more than others, some that depend on it way too much... Technology controls so much of people lives that they don't tend/even realize it...

I can remember back in the early 90's late 80's when some of the simple games was entertainment... Now you can't pay people to partake in it now...
I can remember when people read for enjoyment & had to actually look in encyclopedias to get their research done... Now it is just in touch of a keyboard... If people don't get the newspaper for comics or the classified they wouldn't even read get/read the newspaper (for some)... I know people that won't even walk or ride a bike to save their lives... Now how bad is that.?.

All I am saying is turn off/put down the cpu, phones, television, remote, video games, car keys, etc... & pick up a newspaper, book, bike, play a game that doesn't require electricity or some form of battery & have fun... If we ever did start producing robots/androids to "make things easier" or help out we will give them way too much power & probably be strongly dependent on them cause we already do on just the little things... I know I am guilty for some of the things, but I think if technology was to end I would be a survivor "how bout' you???"

Re: Are we addicted to technology?

the only similarity we have with our ancestors is that we are people who live in present and look forward to possible future and without them, nobody would start the ideas changing the world. They are the people who started thinking that innovation is important not because they simply wanted it but because they felt it is needed. Innovation then leads to the idea of technology. Probably today it's really impossible to live normally without technology unless each one of us is willing to step back and undress his or her technological disposition.Because, nobody will ever need technology if nobody needs it. So, if nobody would expect a phone call, then there is no need for a cellular phone.
