How do you feel about today's modern metal music scene?

'Rising from the darkness where hell hath no mercy and the screams of vengeance echo on forever, only those who keep the faith shall escape the wrath of the metalliah' Judas Priest-1984 things arent said like that anymore. todays music, 'metal', lacks many things:
1. virtuosity
2.feeling/ passion
3. well thought out balance in musical texture
4. etc.etc. among many other things
most of today's metal bands use fondational techniques like machinegun riffage for chorus', pre chorus', and verses. solos w/ only root -fifths progressions, unintellgible vocals...
What happened to the influence of the great bands of the 80's and 70's that were supposed to help today's music?

I don't think it's that bad. I have to admit that most of the metal I listen to is not recent but bands like Arch Enemy, Killswitch Engage, Devildriver, Sevendust, Avenged Sevenfold and others seem to have a good amount of success. Both critical and popular.

Re: How do you feel about today's modern metal music scene?

I totally back you up! TODAY's metal is the stereotypical stuff. there was so much originality in the 80's. grunge is what killed it, and from that other kinds of music formed. to me, this is just a fad. i sincerely believe that it all started dying w/ nirvana and everything else went bad from there. the feel and passion that singers such as Ronnie James Dio-Dio, Klaus Meine-Scorpians, Rob Halford-Judas Priest, Paul Diano and Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden, Steve Perry-Journey, and other vocalists have others from today's metal scene just cant compare. then the greatest guitarists ever were from that era: Yngwie Malmsteem, Steve Vai, Glenn Tipton, Micheal and Rudolph Shenker, Randy Rhoads, and Van Halen, only to name a few. not to mention how none of you repiled about the riffage remark.

Re: How do you feel about today's modern metal music scene?

Well it does make sense
technology has much improved from the 1980s and I have to say that the moder bands have just gotten to lazy to do some real music
I am very disappointed, but who can blame them?

Re: How do you feel about today's modern metal music scene?

can't be compared to old school rock but to look at it ironically, it's the old ones are more known and missed compared to the new ones but those new ones will be old as well....a cycle.

Don't turn things around here, I said 1999 to indicate that it was a relatively NEW band in response to your earlier post.

You wrote here that you wanted Killswitch Engage in the old bands group. And I disagreed.

Re: How do you feel about today's modern metal music scene?

Metal has kinda been tarnished by being mixed with other genres, alternative for example. Music is always evolving, because people don't want to listen to the same stuff all the time, I still enjoy many of the nu metal bands today. Sure its not as epic and original as the 80s, but its still good. The thing I really agree with you on is how metal suddenly seems to have a formula for success. Rap and Hip-hop have similar formulas, but I didn't really notice it in metal until I started playing guitar hero games. I like the old, but I like the new too. I love all music.
