hummm if you really like Jazz there is Miles Davis, well known.. you might even be able to find some jazz compilation discs that would help you pic out what you want. Although on my brothers disc's you can sometimes find by accident the old jazz songs and they are low quality.

    Re: Jazz recomendations?

Well done getting into the jazz genre. Here are some good names:

    Louis Armstrong (1901-1971)
    Ornette Coleman (born 1930)
    John Coltrane (1926-1967)
    Miles Davis (1926-1991)
    Duke Ellington (1899-1974)
    Dizzy Gillespie (1917-1993)
    Thelonious Monk (1917-1982)
    Charlie Parker (1920-1955)
    Charlie Mingus (1922-1979)

Being more a fan of swing, I recommend these:

    Paul Whiteman (1890-1967)
    Benny Goodman (1909-1986)
    Glenn Miller (1904-1944)
    Artie Shaw (1910-2004)
    Tommy Dorsey (1905-1956)
    Jimmy Dorsey (1904-1957)
    Ben Webster (1909-1973)
    Coleman Hawkins (1904-1969)
    Cab Calloway (1907-1994)
    Fats Waller (1904-1943)
    Charlie Christian (1918-1942)
    Count Basie (1904-1984)
    Duke Ellington (1899-1974)
    Benny Carter (1907-2003)

    Re: Jazz recomendations?

I must say as a musican that playing jazz is by far fun than listening sometimes. Take 5 is a great song to play and I am so jealous of my little brother who seems to be a natural at playing jazz. The only songs are better as they are not tainted by other styles. I studied jazz for a while and before Miles Davis is the best forms of Jazz as he created Fusion Jazz where if I remember correctly he fused Jazz with rock or something along those lines.

The old true jazz is better than new age jazz by far!

Damn, you beat me to it!! ^_^

I used to play in Jazz band in high school--still play trumpet & guitar even.

I love me some jazz music. My favs would have to be Miles Davis, Charlie "The Bird" Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. The revolutionized jazz music with a flurry of sixteenth notes and well played instruments! Best jazz musicians to ever walk the earth!! ^_^

Miles Davis being one of the best trumpet players ever! Even on drugs, that man could make his trumpet reach out to you and grab your heart.

i have to say that Stan Getz is my favourite jazz player. his voice has such a lyrical smooth tone to it. i have to say that he hit his prime when he started to play cool jazz, especially when he grooved with Horace Silver, Johnny Smith, and Oscar Peterson. the only thing that i dont like about him was his past. as a teenager he abused drugs and was expelled from some schools for possesion. as an adult, he developed a drinking problem and started to beat his wife while drunk. but now he is drug free. i have to say that another peak for Getz would have to be the formation of a group including the pianist Kenny Barron, whom Getz described as "my musical other half". his vocals plus the soft piano tune creats an illusion of heaven.
