On a remake:
Nah, I don't think they should bother. Though I would buy it.
On the game itself:
FFVII and its multiple spinoffs never distracted me from other great titles. I don't quite see what you guys mean when you say it's hogging the glory. And if it is taking up a lot of the spotlight, well, hey... it's an awesome title, what can I say?
The materia system was awesome in that it was wrapped into the storyline. Plus, it was fun [<3 collecting stuff].
The storyline, while not =terribly= complex, wasn't quite as simple as some of you've said. And the characters' diverse personalities made up for it, anyway.

But I digress. I didn't really think that Sephiroth was as memorable a villain as say Kefka. And you really didn't have any mages other than Aeris and she dies.
Yes nothing is more memorable than a guy that reminds me of Bozo the clown. And I have a bad fear of clowns. The materia system does make things a little easier but then again it makes things harder because you have to do a lot of leveling just to learn a spell. The only thing that made Sephiroth memorable was One Winged Angel. He isn't that interesting or horrid of a an antagonist compared to most FF villians or even villians from other video games. Of course nothing beats the weirdness or oddity that is Asmodaeus from Shadow Hearts Covenant.

Consider yourself one of the few. X.X
FF7 made a lot of new gamers. And it was practically the only RPG most other gamers ever played!
It's kinda' like a child's first food... they only care about that food, and will judge everything on that food... and not even finish other foods if it's not as "good".
They get a bit blinded by it... all of a sudden, if anything's different from FF7 (even if it's good), they'll already have a rather negative reaction to it.
Or worst case scenario: They see other RPGs and just think "Psh! It's not Square! It's not even worth it!"....
It's not an exaggeration, there's a lot of "FF7 FTW" fans out there who bash on other RPGs that they haven't even tried.
So... yeah... it kinda' sucked that it DID take all the glory.

Truthfully I thought that Final fantasy III (Final Fantasy III or DS in US) and Final fantasy VI (final fantasy III in US) were better... Dirge of cerberus wasn't bad but not a fan of crisis core!

What?!? Crisis Core was really good! And the battle system was not that bad either. But the whole side mission business was kinda icky ><
Re: to be or not to be final fantasy 7
I enjoyed ffVII and would very much like to see a remake. I have A PSP and would love to see FFVII made for it. Companys say a lot of things however if they see a market they may change their minds.

Speakin of FF7, i just stumbled upon the FF7AC thread in the spoilers section and man it was a helluva funny and shocking thread. Take a peek and see what i mean...
Anyway....

I don't think that a remake will be done for a psp but hey in case you're unaware of it, you can convert a ps1 game into a psp game. You can still enjoy ff7 on your handheld...
