Re: The Vampire Fad- Why you hate it or love it.
I'm a fan of True Blood, myself. I love the books, as well. I like the take on if vampires were real - That's exactly how it would be.
The "vampire fad" will come and go, like everything else does. I've always been fascinated by vampire lore and stories. How the legend of vampires came about... The superstitions they held in Eastern Europe... Vlad The Impaler (aka Dracula!)
No one mentioned how rad Anne Rice's take on vampires is. The BOOKS, not the movies. She delves into a world that looks more at what a vampire is really thinking and feeling, and the struggle of their existence and all that. Really good stuff.
But as Zev said, vampires make good ratings. People love vampires!
And for the record... I have to say this... It takes a LOT to really really scare me. Really, my friends and family look at me strange while we watch a scary movie or something. I just don't get scared easy, sorry. Creeped out, yes.
But Lady Bathory terrifies me. Absolutely scares me to death!! I know she's totally long dead, but still... Just... The fact no one really knows the real number behind all the girls she tortured and slaughtered... OMFG!! She got bored and older so she decided to become a mass murderer. OMG!!
Re: The Vampire Fad- Why you hate it or love it.
It's estimated to be over 300, at least. There's pretty interesting stories on how she did it too. Makes you wonder.
The worst serial killers are supposed to be males, but I say she was waay more disturbed then any male serial killer known. I mean she used to stick needles into a girl one by one till she bled to death. =O
So she scares me too, but hell. Vampirism relvoves around sex and violence so it's no shock.

I've heard that number too... There were also some documents that have 500 but I think that's a bit exaggerated. Then again... We'll never know. >.<
Bathory was indeed a sick woman! Some of the things she did were ... Literally unspeakable. There were confessions from her servants that helped her get victims that couldn't even begin to describe what this woman did.
I think that's the seller for the whole vampire fad: Sex and our insatiable love of violence and gore. LOL!
Re: The Vampire Fad- Why you hate it or love it.
Well I've heard some horror stories that she could've built her entire castle over again with the total number of bones piled up and still have extra. So she wasn't exactly to be messed with. I've even heard a slave confession to being about 700 murders total, including some young males.
But I don't think sex and violence is what completely sells. Most people now only want the sex and the combination is thought of to be sick and relate to bondage and other fetishes.
When in fact that the entire point. That's why Twilight doesn't do it for me. It focuses on sex appeal, but doesn't deliver.(the sex appeal isn't very good either.)
The violence is skimpy and left as something horrible, but that destroys the entire point of vampirism.
I find twilight to be the "My Immortal" of vampires.(Yes, that horrid Harry Potter fanfic written by a 'gawf' twelve year old obsessed with MCR and Amy Lee.)
Meh, anyway. One interesting thing is that how the conception of vampires change way too drastically without explanation. For instance, why is it vampires haven't been able to go out in sunlight? That certainly wasn't an issue for any early vampires, or true ones. It was in fact only added in the silent film Nosferatu, and yet most don't even know that fact.
If I read something with vampires, each physical trait shouldn't be overly described,(twilight and such) but defined as to what purpose it serves. Do she even f**king explain what the reason why they sparkle is?
No, just "Hi, I sparkle. But I'm a vampire. But I don't want to hurt you. I just want you to love me. But I won't change you into one until the very end of the last book, causing generic conflict between us that is later a waste of time, cause I change you anyway."
Understand my frustration?

 I can see where you'd be frustrated, lol! I've never been one for Twilight. Perhpas it's because I'm older, I don't know. I read the first book and hated every single word I read. But, once I start reading something I have to finish it. I saw the previews for the movie and laughed. *shrug* That's just me, though. Guess I like more brutal vampires, haha!
I think the changes are what I like about vampire lore. It varies from culture to culture. Many places have different names for vampires, and they have different traits. That's why I love to read/see a different take on the vampire... Blood, sunlight, stakes and garlic get WAY WAY old and boring.
That's why I really loved 30 Days Of Night (I read the graphic novel and comic series first, thank you)... It's a more of a ... Zombie-ish vampire. Where they aren't all elegant and pretty... They are monsterous beasts and live to feed. Ok, I'll admit I enjoyed every single second of that movie... I lived in Alaska for a few years so I know how scary that could be lol!

Re: The Vampire Fad- Why you hate it or love it.
I like vampires, as I find all mythical beasts interesting. but I hate the "vampire movement," I dont want to be too harsh, but its a mockery of an otherwise very interesting ancient legend.
