Diamond in the Rough | Are Video Games Art? Over the years, there have been many video games to come out. They have ranged anywhere from ugly as sin to beautiful as the face of God. They have told stories that are 2-dimensional and obscure, and stories so full and complete with characters that are so well developed that it could happen in real life. There has been debate about whether a video game could ever be considered art. What are your opinions? Can a video game be a work of art? What is a work of art, really? Are there any video games today that are art? What are they, and what makes them art? |

Well I feel that games are stories they have being a middle and an ending writteiing a story is an art in it self if your story sucks nobody will bother reading past the first few pages. Kinda like if a game sucks you might not really want to play past the first few hours (i.e Final Fantasy 7 or The Davinci Code) and the thing about games is now its not just a story its 30 Animasion and that takes time and skill I should know heh I've used Cinima 4D for my animasions for about 3-4 years now and that makes me feel that what I'm doing is art not math hell my spelling sucks and my math is great but I normaly don't use any complex math to make any of the items tables people cars ect... EDIT: sorry bad habbit of mixing y and d think I'm dislexic.

Yes they are art. because if you think about all of the frames they create to make the sequences then its just same as making a stop motion capture movie. A a kind of digital artist...but not a very good one......i think if you think about all the hard work someone has done just to make a character look realistic then why should it not be called art???????? Just because it is a platform for fighting, building, manipulation the characters it doesn't take away the fact that it is still art. For someone to create this digital landscape where people are able to explore and experience things in a third person perspective etc. I hope that made kind of sense.

Diamond in the Rough | Re: Are Video Games Art? I'd say they are. Creators have to do architechure and design things in the game such as furniture/charcters/costumes/fighting plays/world maps/ ect... They do a lot and creativeity is a part of art... Drawing costumes and chacrters....definantly art ^__^ |

Video game makers should be given more recognition as their work is not just a flick of a hand... ^_^
