Re: Why people blame video games

I just did an essay on this... I could post it here... but its too long... so..
yeah ppl need to blame something for all the bad stuff that happens... and when they fail to see that society itself its wuts messing around with ur minds... they turn to video games... specially FPS(first person shooters). Why? simple: gun -> trigger -> bullet -> head -> blood explosion...
they think that by us gamers seing that, we might go and turn violent... and in some rare but really rare cases this might actually happen, well u wont go hulk or something like that, but ur personality might get a lil more violent... cuz video games do affect ur mind... but wut ppl seem to miss is that if a person decides to go to a school shot 15 ppl and then kill himself, it isnt cuz they played some GTA and decided it would be cool to kill a bunch of ppl... but that they had some mental/emotional problem developing over the time lead to that(yeah I did some research ^^)....
wut they also miss is that video games might acually have some relaxing properties... cuz instead of going hit a dude that made u mad in the morning u just go play some CS and after a couple of rounds u forget about it...
I conclusion... video games do affect ur mind... but to a very small poit. but there r some ppl that just feel the need to bitch about it, and the worst of all.... with no accurate and actual evidence.
Thank you SasuraiHell for making my sig. ur the best.

The studies linking violence in videogames are usually shitilly done. They look at a school shooting or a kid with anger issues, and then they look at the games he plays, and their conclusion is that the videogames are linked to the kids being violent.
The truth is, if you're violent, you'll go out and buy the game that lets you shoot pedestrians, if you like cars, you'll buy the racing game.

I've played violent games since I was old enough to use the keyboard on the computer to play Doom when I was 5 years old. No adverse effects here.

Edit: There was a segment on the news the other day linking action video games to better eyesight.

Like it was sad many times before.

People don't like pointing the finger at themselves.

I just went pasted a funny video on Youtube, and just because it had a few swear words this women blamed the video for having her little nephew cuss.

Don't get me wrong, but cmon. BE reasonable.

We are living in the 21st century. You take the computer away. They'll just find somewhere else to use it. You take the video games. Why not go to a friends house and play it.

Not like it could be stop. Just do your parenting JOB, and set the grounds.

My point of view is its always some old buzzard who has never picked up a controller in his or her lifetime that is always criticizing a video game and blaming it for the violence in this country. You decide what path to take in life, not a video game.

People blame video games for the cause of violence because they may not admit they are at fault,so it's easy to unleash their bitterness on something that has no human quality. But video games aren't necessarily responsible for violence and all the other things that happen. It is ourselves.

Re: Why people blame video games

In my experience Parents wouldn't be so ticked off if it wasn't for unethical salesmen who tell them to buy inappropriate games for their children. A 13 year old does not need an M game especially when the parent has just asked for something appropriate for the age or returned something else because it wasn't. These salesmen do damage to the entire industry. They leave parents with the impression that games are themselves inherently violent because, after all, that is what they have been told was made for their kids.

Don't give me this crap about the rating system either. Yes, I know it. Yes, I have taught it to my kids. The game systems are mine not theirs. I have yet however to hear an employee point it out to a parent who doesn't know asking them for help. No they just whip out the M games that they can get the biggest buck for and tell them to buy it.

You want to know why parents complain that games are violent there is your answer right there. They are, the ones they have been given to believe is standard are very violent. There is a reason they are M after all.

And guess what? Children do what they see. People tend to do what they see it's just more pronounced when they are younger. So yes, if they hear swear words they will repeat them and yes younger children will imitate what they have seen. Don't even get me started on all the boys I knew growing up who strapped a cape on and jumped off the garage pretending to be superman.

Why are games blamed? Because certain games have part of the blame to share along with every other poor influence in society that teaches kids violence is the answer to their problems. Fix that first and then you can scream about the parents. Until then I don't want to hear it.

I was not allowed to play games with blood in them until I was ten. This was during the Mortal Kombat age and everybody was freaking out over fatalities they had in the game. The rating system is totaly screwed up and innacurrate alot of the time. It's worthless.

One time I went to blockbuster and I wanted to rent a rated teen game when I was 14 or 15. The woman wouldn't let me rent whatever it was called. I looked at her like, "are you crazy women I see rape and murder on tv and movies all the time what I'm renting isn't shit compared to that"
So I just came back when she wasn't working and rented the game. I don't expect her to allow me to rent a porno dvd like this other guy who worked there. But damn't just let me rent my freakin video game.

Games with higher ratings don't cost more than other games.
They must be pretty corrupt where you live because I have never seen a game seller who pushed M-rated games on kids or parents of kids who don't know what it's about.
Around here they explain exactly what the game is about and guess what, EVERYONE is allowed to buy M-rated games around here. The ratings are just for informational purposes.
