What if it's an extension of that, considering how change comes from mutation that becomes evolution? The experiments that were done on him and his "kin" aggravated such mutations and each gained unique abilities because of it?
cool, was there a past expedition that should be included in their history so they are leary of the Tall Ones? It would be fun to have something like that in their history.

Plus, Sci-Fi humans always seem to have some "skeleton in the closet" that makes dealing with other species tense
