Ichigo's first sword was given to him (inadvertantly) by Rukia Kuchiki, due to her inability to destroy the hollow attacking Ichigo and his family, and thus having to transfer her power into him.
Ichigo's second sword, which is the same sword but in shikai form, was recieved after his training with Kisuke Urahara. His sword was broken by Byakuya after Ichigo realized Rukia was being taken away. Ichigo fought Renji, and Byakuya destroyed his soul reaper powers, the source of his spiritual pressure, and his sword. Hwe then recieves training from Kisuke to become a soul reaper again. His sword is broken just down to the handle, and with Ichigo's will, he calls out the name of his sword and it becomes permanently locked in Shikai, unless ichigo decides to use his Bankai.
But then, the question needs to be asked... "What happened to Rukia's Sword?" As after the first episode, we never really saw it until after the end of the Soul Society story arc, (or the fact that she actually had a bankai ability...) Or could it be that when Ichigo stole almost all of Rukia's Shinigami powers, he effectively stole (and converted) her sword with them. And that after being 'awakened' by Urahara into a true Shinigami, that was when he created his true sword...

Rukia only meant to give Ichigo some of her shinigami powers, but somehow(Due to his huge reiatsu) Ichigo took all of Rukia's shinigami powers, so she wasn't able to wear the black shinigami robe thing, or use her sword. She says her shinigami powers will slowly return, but they don't because of the Hougyoku Urahara Kisuke snuck in her Gigai(A fake human body) actually became apart of her soul, and for some reason with the Hougyoku she can't get back her powers... Eventually, Aizen takes the Hougyoku out of Rukia, and after that, Rukia's shinigami powers slowly start to come back, and they show us her zanpaktou and shikai.
Oh! And in episode 19, you can see Ichigo regaining his shinigami powers and he holds the zanpaktou in it's original form(Or his "first sword"), which then evolves into Shikai... The bandaged sword thing =D
Re: How did Ichigo in bleach get his sword?
but you guys are for got that when he got his new sword he became half hallow and every now and then he becomes hollow.for instance first time using banki he became a hollow in that fight then he riped off his hollow mask so i just had to add how ausome Ichigo is ok bye
Re: How did Ichigo in bleach get his sword?
Another Question,(kind of off topic), how could Ichigo's dad be a Captain of the 13 Court Guard Squads, meaning being dead right, and "give birth" to "humans"? Can Giguys (sry if i spell it wrong =)) really do that?
Re: How did Ichigo in bleach get his sword?
he got it from rukia when she gave him her powers in episode1
Re: How did Ichigo in bleach get his sword?
ok...for those of you how do not read the manga...Ichigo got some of his spirt power from rukia but in the manga if one of your parents are a soulreaper and the other is a human with a strong spirtal power, you are what are called a pureblood. Puebloods have a strong spirtal power. In this case so ichigo is a pureblood
