Shinji's got it rough yeah, but I would have to say Rei has it the worst. The main reason shes not even an original human, but a clone of shinjis dead mom. secondly the fact that she was made by her, for lack of a better description, former life's husband. that dude has some issues. third shes treated like some sort of guinea pig. totally whack in my opinion

point #1: Please don't use the word "homo" to refer to homosexuals. It's offensive.

point #2: Kaworu isn't necesarily a homosexual. (both anime and manga imply he's more or less completely ignorant of conventional sexuality, personal space and romance... while the manga gives him a clear set of "alternate" motives for hitting on Shinji in the first place)

point #3: Something tells me Shinji being hit on by that homosexual (at least in the anime) was the best thing that had happened to him in months, if not years. That would seem to imply that if Kaworu gets the homosexual label: Shinji should be sharing it.

And honestly, I don't think any of the three children's lives sucked half as much as everyone else seems to think. There certainly wasn't anything going against them that they couldn't have overcome mentally by simply refusing to wallow in their respective nuerosis and throw eternal "I'm all alone forever" pity parties for themselves.

All of them had chances to save themselves from their own bullshit. Only Rei actually did anything to take her life into her own hands, even if it was

I feel loads worse for Kaworu, Touji and Hikari. Largely because they actually TRIED to live their shitty lives, rather than hiding in the proverbial closet with their hands over their ears.

for myself it's really hard to say, as all of their harsh times seem to interwind with one another leading up to the story. Shinji to me though sticks out, because of his lack of male role model, his low self-esteem, his somewhat depressed, meloncholy demenor. I mean this doesn't necessarily mean he had a hard life, but when you look at the reasons as to why he is like this, you begin to understand. but all in all they all have very distressed lives that leave the individual characters in an emotional spiral of anger, depression, envy, hate, etc.

i agree with this. Shinji needed a friend, and even if his intentions where questionable, it was a good thing for Shinji to hear someone tell him they loved him. (i think i would survive without that, tho)

hmmm... i donno. Asuka's was pretty F'ed up. and she did cover it up pretty well. it was just her covering up that got her down, when she couldnt beat angels like shinji could (although it wasnt him beating them either, as much as it was 01 itself)
