well really there is two ending depending on if you watch the movies or not.

episode 23 ish a little bit after shinji fought an angel with some one inside.

yeah with the last four episodes it does go a little weird. of course they find out about Rei and the life form that she is. It ends up with Shinjis friend Kaoru getting really close to Adam, who really is lillth. then afterwards Ritsuko plans to kill Gendu because of his fasination with Rei and playing god.

Then Shinj fights with him self and ending up creating alternate realities proving that life is what we make it. And everything we do, is because we choose it to.

i seen the last movie and it go so confusing. He got a kiss and then in the end that girl said to him that she is sick. Is that really a best way to end a movie? or the series
