Unless I'm mistaken I believe that is a refrence to Bleach where all the shinigami are dead (except for our dear Ichigo of course), but remain "alive" with their swords.
very good but they do have fight to the death at least with kenpachi and also they fight with arrancars that use swords and technically dead already but you got it
