Diamond in the Rough | Anime Sci-fi: true science fiction or science fantasy I was sitting around recently and i thought of a small exerpt from an old arthur c clarke novel which i read while back. he stated that he wrote science fiction novels and not science fantasy novels and went into the depth of differentiating between the two. now i was thnking how this applies to anime and i wanted to know the opinion there in of people and some of there favorite animes and whether they are: science fiction where science fact is taken to one of its actual plausible theoretical outcomes, or science fantasy with its nigh outlandish ideas, technology and happenings. Myself i do enjoy both, but id have to say that im more of a science fiction type of guy, and things that i believe are based in such are cowboy bebop, captain harlock(og78), and the gundam series. these are all good examples of scientific ideas taken to their best possible outcome and used to tell an interesting story. What is your opinion? etc. |

"Planetes" (space) is a good example of a hard sci-fi anime. "Patlabor" for mecha. "Yukikazi", for aircraft. but they are rather few and far between. even "full metal panic", with the exception of the Lambda Driver... i do enjoy a good Science fantasy, Last Exile, nadesco, cowboy bebop,etc...the ideals that they come up with are great to watch, and make for wonderful worlds. sure trying to bend them to match our science is impossible but it makes for a good show. and Clarke is a good read for sci-fi fans...really should get around to reading 2001 again...and Rama

Diamond in the Rough | Re: Anime Sci-fi: true science fiction or science fantasy I concur on all accounts here, however I myself would lump Cowboy into science fiction even the gates they use are fantastic in use but Ive heard actually thought about theoretically. The line is a thin one never the less and whether thats enough to constitute it being sci-fantasy i couldnt say, personally no. |
