Slam Dunk, the comic, should be the best. The other basketball anime shows/mangas are just all gay looking guys who probably won't even see the ball with their long hair. Steer Clear from those.

Princess Nine, A Girls High School Baseball team is formed (with mysterious motivations) to take on the Boys league with the goal of taking the championship...

and in fansubs, there is the NHK series called 'Major'

Boxing, there's 'Hajime No Ippo' licensed by GENEON USA under the title 'Fighting Spirit'

'Go', there is 'Hikaru No Go' a series popular enough to trigger a Go revival in Japan, that VIZ/Shoupro is distributing...

There's also the excellent, but overlooked series, 'Angelic Layer' based on the CLAMP manga series.

but what I meant is Slam Dunk has both a show and the comic, and I am just telling you to check out the show first, and then go check out the comic

yea i would go for prince of tennis also or eyeshield 21 i'm not sure if that's been made into an anime yet or not.
