Don't get me started on DearS, Ah! It belongs in porn.

I have a hard time believing in a serious romance where one partner has the mind of a 6 year-old, a slave collar, has no human capacity for experience/emotion or any sort of contract preventing them from doing anything but.

You realize that Chobits is fantasy about a man falling in love with a love doll?
... and that men ACTUALLY do this...

Maybe it's different for me because I have to live in this cultural and deal with men on a daily basis who REALLY believe that all women have a Belldandy inside them just waiting to be bought with enough Louis Vitton merchandise ~_~; But stuff like Chobits makes me wish I were a lesbian.

Not that most shoujo manga these days has any more positive messages to send girls. Except maybe "Screw that Belldandy stuff: you can get MORE Louis Vitton merchandise if you're a sexually promiscuous idol singer and wear way too much makeup."
I know what you mean however most animes are kind of sexist in a way. the way I look at the series is that I think this is were we are heading. If you think about it instead of acually talking to people we come to forums like this to talk to people. Now in days instead of getting a real girlfriend/boyfriend you can just buy a plastic one (I know that is just sick).

I know is scary but that is just funny to me.

I liked Chobits, it's funny, not all the time but most of the time...

I liked the way his nose bleeds everytime he sees something echi... it's just hilarious...

I don't like the whole "love" story... I mean...she is a robot for God's sake... why would he fall inlove with a robot, she's cute...but her "power button" is placed not so well ...

    Re: Chobits

^_^ well, i really liked the series... not so much for the cuteness and echhiness, but for the heart of what it was trying to say, "what is love?" "what qualifies as love?" "what makes it different?" "the same?"... i know i sound dumb to some people, but i don't think it was about a man falling in love with a sex doll... in fact, i hate how Chii is portraited in all her pictures, i hate how she has only been drawn artisticly with Hideki ONCE that i've seen, but i digress...

i really think that Hideki loved her, and i believe that Chii loved him in her own way too... if it was about sex, i don't think he would have stayed with her... and i think she has a child's mind, only becuz she was rebooted a few month's ago... i think with time, like anyone else, she would grow into a mature thinking individual...

but mostly, i liked what they said about memories... it doesn't matter if anyone else in the world remembers it, as long as you do, than it still happend...

    ^_^ but that's just me...

It wasn't that it was about sex... it was that it was about a human being falling in love with what is esentially a VIRTUAL girlfriend over which he had more or less complete control. People don't pay $10,000 for "Real Dolls" because they want to have sex with them: people actually long for companionship from them. The same thing goes for love simulations, internet relationships, pedophilia, etc. Most of those interests stem from an inability to maintain or fear of real relationships with thinking, feeling human beings who aren't necesarily catering to your every desire. Dolls don't reject you, cheat on you, or make you do dishes... they also don't care if you have ambition, ability or wash daily.

Chii's "cuteness" and entire appeal came from her complete innocence and childlike mind. Reguardless of whether her body was adult: she has the mind of a toddler and that's what Hideki (and the audience) fell in love with. That's also what the entire "moe" industry is built around and the reason virtual child pornography is a major problem in fandom right now. Had Hideki taken Chii on in the role of a PARENT and the anime hadn't made so many sexual jokes at Chii's expense (the on switch, the panties, etc.): maybe I would be more likely to understand.

Right now, the whole thing is just massively creepy.

    I also have a lot of issues with Loveless... ~_~;

well, i see that point too, but i'm very optimistic when it comes to things like love becuz i believe in it so highly... however, there is a fine line between "i love you for you" and "i love you becuz you're safe/you won't hurt me"

^_^ i'm not that blind... anymore at least... i hope...

    Re: Chobits

^o^ awww! but that seems like a cute movie! is it an English film? i noticed it wasn't as over the top as American acting usually is...

but, pertaining to the subject, i suppose the only difference between Bianca and Chii is that Chii can talk, but i guess that gives a whole new view on what makes a relationship... is it just love? or is it communication as well? is loving a doll the same as a loving person? the same as loving a dog? there's lots of gray areas i suppose, as for my stance on it... who's to say a love for dog/doll/persocom is anything less than love for a human... people say things can't love you back; however, some love people who don't love them back, is it the same? is it better? worse? what makes a dog's/doll's/persocom's love any less than a human's? (i believe) there is a creator that made love as love, and that love can go through many different things, but still be love...

so, in case i said it sonfusingly, i think love can happen between anything and anyone; whether or not the love is genuine is something people have to find for themselves...

    ^_^ but that's just me~!

    Re: Chobits

    ( *sigh* Blargh whatever... )
I wouldn't much say that it's talking at all. Or loving back or etc...
You're seeing it too simply with no depth, abu...

The main question would be... would it have feelings?
Afterall, chobits or persocoms or whatever would obviously be programmed... however, if we keep going on and on about specifications, we could compare a human's bodily system and functions to be the same as a robot's programming and blah blah blah. (wow, I'm so deep )

But moreover, how were these characters based?
If by a culture who often views women as these perfectly docile and almost robotic creations, we would then complain on and on about how shogunistic ways seem to die hard... and etc etc...

If by views and bases, then it's a almost a done-deal that these persocoms and chobits would not be as loving or as wonderful as they would be to western-cultured viewers.
...unless of course if you try to overassume about the feelings of the aritsts, then it would go into a strange debate about lesbianism and etc... blargh blargh yargh.

If by love... then it becomes complicated, beyond words and actions...
And it would be something that you, Abu, couldn't possibly win in. You're not exactly a philosopher, just an optimist. Love ya.
... anywho... if by love... at any standard... no views or feelings or prejudice within this conversation...
Then would these chobits or persocoms have the ability to love?
... no, I don't agree in actions at all... no words and no eye glimmer and no desperate actions could convince me of love.
And the debate of "what is love" and "does love exist" goes on and on and on with no end in sight on this forum... but in my opinion, I'll keep it as simple as can be: From our views of what we can "know" about love today, these robotic machines (if they are as advanced as they are shown -randomized programming and all- ) have just as much of a chance at "love" as we do.

...I don't exactly have high hopes in humanity as Abu... so "love" to most of them is as real as what they make of their imagination.
