Now no doubt there are preexisting 'Giant Robot' series, (e.g. Tetsugin-28 is a 'Giant Robot' series...), the series that established 'Mecha' as its own separate 'genre' would be 'Mobile Suit Gundam' which originally aired back in 1979. The series itself was canceled prematurely, but very much like the success of 'Star Trek', popularity soared during reruns of the series...
