Ok...we`ll when u wanna see animes that r popular, just go to animenfo and look around in the top200.
But if u wan my opinion...u could watch animes like - School Rumble, Midori no Hibi, Chobits, GetBackers, FMA, Azumanga Daioh, Air Gear, Love Hina
They all have a great story (some crazy as a**), they all contain humor - u`ll laugh urself to death watching them, (School Rumble, Azumanga Daioh, Air Gear r the best fr u if u like extremely funny animes
And...their all in the animenfo top200! XD

... I have a crap load more (that I've physically viewed) but cause I've seen so many, the list is hard to keep up with. Those are the one's I've seen just by cheating and going through YouTube (minus DBZ, Bleach, Gravi, T in T, and GSG)
Its interesting to find some of the stuff there. I want full Hellsing dangit!! I have some of the manga but I wanna see series.

i didnt watch it but my husband did and he loved it. infact i am hoping to get him lain for christmas. since i first was introduced to anime from adult swim my tastes stayed in that genre bleach,full metal, inuyasha. but i am trying broaden my scope as well

Haha, do get Lain... I strongly recommend it! It's simply the best... And you can never be wrong with its opening song... Duvet by BoA... It's beautifully made and suits the theme very well... ^-^
I'm glad to hear that you are moving in to the Cyberpunk genre... Try watching Ghost in the Shell too, if you haven't yet...
