The History OF Anime

Quote:
The history of anime begins at the start of the 20th century, when Japanese filmmakers experimented with the animation techniques that were being explored in the West. Though filmmakers in Japan experimented with animation earlier, the first widely popular anime series was Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy (1963). During the 1970s, anime developed further, separating itself from its Western roots, and developing unique genres such as mecha. Notable shows in this period include Lupin III and Mazinger Z. During this period several filmmakers became famous, especially Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oshii.

In the 1980s, anime was accepted in the mainstream in Japan, and experienced a boom in production. The start of the Gundam franchise and the beginnings of Rumiko Takahashi's career began in this decade. Akira set records in 1988 for the production costs of an anime.

The 1990s and 2000s saw an increased acceptance of anime in overseas markets. Akira and Ghost in the Shell (1995) became famous worldwide. The series Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z became a worldwide successes. Other series like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop were popular in Japan and attracted attention from the West. Spirited Away shared the first prize at the 2002 Berlin Film Festival and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003, and Innocence: Ghost in the Shell was featured at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

The first generation of Japanese animators
The earliest known Japanese animation (discovered in 2005) was produced circa 1907 and consists of fifty frames drawn directly onto a strip of celluloid. The untitled short with a running length of about 3 seconds depicts a young boy in a sailor suit writing the kanji "活動写真" (katsudō shashin, for "moving pictures") on a board, then turning towards the viewer, removing his hat, and offering a salute. The creator's identity is unknown.

Sadly very few complete animations made during the beginnings of Japanese animation have survived until now. The reasons vary, but they are mostly commercial. After they had their big time, reels (being property of the cinemas) were sold to smaller cinemas in the country and then disassembled and sold as strips or single frames.

Shimokawa Oten: A political caricaturist and cartoonist, who worked for the magazine Tokyo Puck. He was hired by Tenkatsu to do an animation for them. Due to medical reasons, he only was able to do five movies, including Imokawa Mukuzo Genkanban no Maki, before he returned to his previous work as a cartoonist.

Kouchi Jun'ichi: A caricaturist and painter, who also had studied watercolor painting. 1912 he also entered the cartoonist sector and was hired for an animation by Kobayashi Shokai later in 1916. He is viewed as the technically most advanced Japanese animator in the 1910s. His works include around 15 movies.

Kitayama Seitaro: Unlike the other pioneers of his era, Kitayama made animations on his own, not being commissioned by larger corporations. He even founded his own animaton studio Kitayama Eiga Seisakujo (which was closed due to lack of commercial success). His animation technique was the chalkboard animation and, later, paper animation (with and without preprinted backgrounds).

Re: The History OF Anime

Only read your last paragraph.

There will be an increase of ecchi anime and it seems that anime based off of visual novels and other h-games is on the rise. Also there may be more CG anime coming out the future, something similar to Advent Children. Graphics like Advent Children in anime wouldn't be so uncommon.

Despite the fact that anime have gain firm grounds in other countries. Domestically the anime industry will collapse due to low wages, poor working environment plus other stuff I don't remember from an article I read if these don't change now. Also there are a lack of 'good' animators in Japan.

Re: The History OF Anime

i agree with you on that ,they should should if they havent attempted it yet to have privat funding it sounds farfetched but as popular as it is i think if they could find the rught people and give them what they needed that the anime domesticly would improve not by much but you wouldn't see that much of a difrence but it would improve. of course this is just my opinon.

and as for CG yea i think its al going that way wich sucks i liked the 70's and early 80's stye anime i prefer them almost but that because im part of the older anime
genration the new stuff dosnt impress me much, i still love transfomer, voltron, ect.
but it is becomming popular with the younger viewrs wich is why the old style anime is slowy fadeing which is sad

If you didn't write that please put it in a quote tag [ quote ] and add a link to where you got the information. Otherwise its just plagiarism.

Re: The History OF Anime

Grumble Grumble Grumble

Unfortunatly, as it is right now, the Japanese Anime Industry is in a bubble market that will either have to deflate, or implode. Many a Anime Studio has expanded production (and increased licensing costs for a series) based on the assumption of growing world demand for their product. The reality in the US (the largest foreign market) is that Anime demand has stablized, with licensed DVD sales actually shrinking.

Mean while in Japan, experienced produces are saying that anime series, that in the past would have been skipped over because of poor plot lines, are being produced, driven by the investment companies (since anime is one of the vew industries in Japan showing growth in the past few years) result in a lack of resources for individual series...

The DVD remake of the 'Negima' release was made necessary because of the poor quality of the initial TV release. The remake still required Studio Xebec/Production I.G. to transfer the production team from the just finished 'Fafner' to do this...

A recent Japanese Goverment white paper on the Anime industry stated that more Anime is being produced now then in anytime in the history of the industry, but only the most popular series are making profits. Under these market conditions, contraction of the industry is only a matter of time...

Estimates are that more counterfeit bootlegs were sold dollar wise then licensed anime last year by industry estimates... The fact remains that money makes the world go around... The number of anime series licensed this year by US distributors is less then 50% of the number of series licensed two years ago. And if Japanese Studios can't recoup their productions costs, (as their being pressured by over pricing of license fees, over-production of new series, over-estimating the demand for anime, fansubs, bootlegs killing their DVD sales in both Japanese and oversea markets, and cheaper illegal US imports!!!) sooner or later their going to have to reduce producing new series
