Japan Media Arts Festival 2007 Winners

    Grumble Grumble Grumble

In Japan, one of the more significant awards given to Anime productions are the one handed out at the Japan Media Arts Festival, which is funded by the Japanese Government Ministry of Culture. Two of the series (or the ones you're most likely to have heard about) are...
    • Gurren-Lagann, the recent Studio GAINAX release, now licensed by ADV Films
    • Denno Coil, shown on the NHK (Japanese Public Broadcasting) Educational channel, and available in fansubs

2007(11th)Japan Media Arts Festival | Japan Media Arts Plaza:

The Media Arts Festival, being government funded, has a trend towards picking more for quality artistic expression, and makes an interesting contrast to the more popular production awards given out by the Industry funded Tokyo Anime Fair...

Comparing the awards given out in the past, which one do you think has the greater credibility for Anime productions that are truly award winners???

There isn't much comparison. One is an award from the Japanese government acknowledging artistic and cultural merit of both independant and mainstream animation. The other is an industry award granted largely to big money-makers in hopes of garnering larger liscence deals and generating international publicity (Anime Fair was concieved as an international marketting expo... essentially it's a showroom for anime).

The first is the better award.

The winners of the latter are generally the largest earners and fan-favorites.

The magazine awards are equally crap, known for heavy fanboy interference, multiple votes per person and a definate slant toward the series' the magazines' publishers choose to give the most pages (usually their own).

2ch has been doing some independant rankings and awards that are (while definately heavy on the hardcore nerd slant) a bit more indicative of the actual nerd zeitgeist independant of dollar signs and artsy fartsy pretense.
