if you like old things, you should watch a favorite of mine, 'Serial Experiments Lain'.
as far as a manga for that, i don't know. but i have the whole series on dvd, it's pretty short, about 4 or 5 dvd's.

anyway, it's really amazing! it completely changed my view of reality,
the series is pretty trippy; insanely mind-altering, and if you like thinking, it's great.
not like 'Ghoust in the Shell' type thinking; it's not futuristic at all. present day.

and to make it better, the theme song is great! :3
plus, the main character, Lain (i think she's 13 or 14) is really relatable.

WELL, i'm just ranting now, haha, but go check it out! super interesting~

Re: Looking for a new anime

Lots of good stuff out there lately. For action series, I cannot recommend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann enough. By far my favorite series of the past couple years. It starts off a little goofy, but stick with it cause it gets really really good.

One Piece is a great series if you are looking for the typical long running, Shounen action series but I think it is way better then the ever popular Naruto or Bleach. And with more then 400 episodes and still going it will keep ya busy for awhile.

Hayate No Gotoku is a really funny comedy / parody / romance series that I just watched. Quickly became one of my favorites. I pretty much plowed through the entire 52 episode first series over the span of a long weekend. The second series is airing right now and it sticks closer to the manga from what I hear and it is just as funny.

I have no idea what you have already seen or what you like, but some more of what I would consider "Must See":
    Cowboy Bebop
    Samurai Champloo
    Rurouni Kenshin
    RahXephon
    Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
    Eureka Seven
    Hajime no Ippo
    Seto No Hanayome
    Last Exile
    Toradora!
    Fullmetal Alchemist

That's a good variety there I think. Good mix of old and new from a number of different genres. I would recommend reading the summaries on wikipedia or something and then check out the first few episodes of a show to give it a chance. I have been spending alot of time on AnimeSeason.com lately. It is kinda like hulu.com for anime. I will usually watch a few episodes of a series and then go buy the DVDs if I like it.

Hope I was some help. I love turning people onto new series that they might not have found otherwise.

Re: Looking for a new anime

Hmmm. Well, one of my recent favorites is Yakitate! Japan. It's like the shounen anime you know and love...but with BREAD. It's the most epic anime you'll ever watch about bread, ever. Probably the only anime you'll ever watch about bread, too, but let's cast that aside, shall we~

I'd also recommend Vampire Knight (it's dark shoujo, but good) and Ghost Hunt (I'm not sure what it is, but I just finished it and it's awesome. It's dark and insanely creepy, but by the heavens, it's good.) Fullmetal Alchemist is also really awesome...it's long, but the plot is excellent. Magical☆Shopping Arcade Abenobashi is good if you want a comedy with some "what the heck" factor...it parodies absolutely everything. To round it off, I'll throw in Ouran High School Host Club (romantic comedy with an awesome reverse harem goin' on) and Genshiken (an anime about otaku. AWESOME otaku.) Hope that gives you some ideas, at least!
