Akira has to be on there... 1988. The unique and cutting edge animation defined the way animation should be done.

sorry, it's not Akira. But I think everyone's overlooking another big "obvious" in the 1988 slot.

Obviously the first is one of the most influential. Changes the way to make and look another new series. This is the case of Astro boy. One another the Mobile Suit Gundam series. A lot of mecha-animes was inspired on macross. Evangelion make a new point of view, mixing mechas with a good-story (with a bad/ugly ending) and religious elements like "the angels" the mention of God and Evil, Heaven and Hell and another stuff like that. This is my opinion.

    Grumble Grumble Grumble

Looking at Best Anime Ranking : Japan Probe: for hints and clues, I would have to say...

'My Neighbor Totoro' (1988) Movie by Hayao Miyazaki.

the award winning 'Full Metal Alchemist' TV for the 2003 shounen adventure...

and I'm going to guess the 'Brave Story' Manga/Anime series, (though the Manga started in 2004...)

    Len owns at this game.

    Two more right...

Since the last unguessed answer is pretty obscure overseas and with adults, I'm guessing it'll stay that way. Will post the 2nd half of the translation after work.
